The world's largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef stretches almost 1500 miles into the Pacific from the tip of Queensland. Designated a Marine Park by the Australian government and a World Heritage Area by UNESCO, the reef is home to an extraordinary abundance of species and habitats. Snorkeling, diving and fishing are rightly popular along the reef, nowhere more so than on the Whitsunday Islands, where the silica sands and aqua waters of the Coral Sea create the perfect beach escape.

The 'Coral Greenhouse' is located in the heart of the Greater Barrier Reef Marine Park at John Brewer Reef and is the largest MOUA installation, sharing a message of reef conservation and restoration. It is the first-ever underwater building created by Artist Jason DeCaires Taylor, who hopes to advance education and offer opportunities for scientists, marine students and tourists to engage in action-based learning and to conduct globally important research on coral reef restoration and new technology. The Coral Greenhouse is located approximately 2 hour boat journey from Townsville city. The best way to experience the Coral Greenhouse is by booking a dive or snorkel experience with one of our approved tourism operators. If you would like to dive MOUA but aren’t a certified diver, book an introductory dive to experience the best of this magical underwater art installation.
Really huge installation and fantastic sculptures. Was lucky enough to watch some of the corals being planted in the green house, really looking to coming back over the years and watching them grow. The Museum is on sand, and the nearby reefs are epic. Really high coral cover and lots of fish and colour.

We have been to over 70 countries and so at least that many Maritime Museums - likely a few hundred.. While the Townsville Maritime Museum cannot be compared to the biggest and best in major shipping cities such as Cobh, Norfolk, Southampton, Belfast etc it is excellent when compared to those in smaller cities and town. The displays & models are very interesting and bought back many memories from incidents like the HMAS Melbourne & HMAS Voyager and our visits to and seeing the actual boats, rafts and ships. A visit here is highly recommended.

Rockhampton Region - gateway to Central Queensland.
What a great bit of history with their Steam Tram - the only one still working in the world!. Lots more to see than the tram though. I had been there a long time ago but now it is great and well worth the time. kids will enjoy it as well.

Gorgeous collection of shells from all over the world, all seen for a gold coin donation. Kids loved seeing the different varieties on offer, as well as specimens of various marine life. We were able to identify the shells we had and were amazed by the variety. Well worth the stop, easy to spend 10 minutes to an hour perusing depending on your interest. Highly recommended.
