This area along the Rhine has long provided fertile ground for wine production.

Scenic road through the heart of the northern black forest. Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt.
Beautiful drive, the road is in excellent condition ,there are plenty off pull-offs for pictures and there a Gasthaus every few kilometres it seems

Fun road to drive with a length of 65 kilometer. Can't miss it because the signs are very clear. We drove from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt but of course you can also drive it the other way around. Be aware there a lot of motorbikes on the road and sometimes trail hogs. There are several sightseeing spots, landmarks, lakes or waterfalls to stop or make a walk. Best stop points are the geroldsau waterfalls and the Mummelsee. We also tried to reach the Bühlerhöhe castle but couldn't find it. The road is perfectly maintained.

There is a toll but you will be happy to pay it when you see where the road takes you. High alpine views. We drove on a partly cloudy day in mid-May. The road was clear, but there was snow banked up in places on the side. There are several easy pullouts, one in particular at a bridge about mid-way where you have wonderful views of snow-capped peaks, so close you feel as if you can reach out and touch them. I was clad in shorts and a shirt and it felt perfect. We live in a mountainous region so we generally do not seek out mountain views, and we were not planning on doing this drive. It turned out be wonderful. We stopped at an alpine cafe and had coffee and cake while looking at the peaks on one side, and the expansive view to the town below. I suppose this is very much a weather dependent activity. There are webcams one can check to give an idea before setting out. On the drive out (down) we passed through picturesque alpine meadows, bathed in wonderful green and dotted with farm buildings. A superb outing.

This is a beautiful road taking you through some of the most beautiful scenery and quintessential Bavarian villages southern Germany/Austria have to offer. We took several days to complete the road, wild camping as we went (there’s plenty of rest stops and small parking bays on the way). It’s simple enough to follow the signs marked the Alpenstrasse/Alpenstraße and it is sometimes marked with a little Edelweiss flower. I strongly recommend driving at least a portion of it in the afternoon/sunset as the light on the mountains and villages at that time of day is stunning.
