Magnificent and symbolic memorial to the 645 crew members of HMAS Sydney II who are still on patrol. The memorial is among the best war memorial that we have seen anywhere we have visited over the years with the Wall of Remembrance, the Sanctuary, the Stele, the Pool of Remembrance and, perhaps the most poignant, the Waiting Woman Sculpture looking eternally to the sea for the return of her sailor. There were a lot of visitors, both young and adult, yet there was silence as if everybody recognised that they stood in a special place.

St Francis Xavier Cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings in Geraldton. Designed and built by the famous Architect/Priest Monsignor John Hawes, it attracts visitors from all over the world. A major restoration, conservation and enhancement project has just been undertaken and the 100 year old building is well worth a visit. The Cathedral is open every day . Guided Tours are available Sunday, Monday & Wednesday at 2:30 Friday at 4:00 Tickets ($5) are available from the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre adjacent to the Cathedral.
This is our 3rd visit to Geraldton in the last 5 years and we never fail to stop by at the cathedral. This time it was just an overnight in Geraldton on our road trip to Coral Bay. Next time we have to timed it with a tour to fully appreciate the history. However, thanks to the Museum in a nearby building which we visited for the first time, I learnt a lot on the life of the talented Architect/Priest Monsignor Hawes.

The Museum tells the story of Monsignor John Hawes as priest and Architect through interpretive panels, audio-visual presentations and artefacts. Come and learn about the extraordinary man behind the buildings! After visiting the Museum, you can book a guided tour through St Francis Xavier Cathedral. During September, the wildflower season in the Mid West, tours every day at 2:30pm, except Friday when its at 4:00pm.
The heritage centre is certainly worth a visit. It acknowledges the life and work of a talented Monsignor John Hawes both as a priest and as an architect. His architectural contribution to the area is remarkable. Called in by chance and glad that we did.

Very pleasant walk to viewing tower with information boards along the way. Also some beautiful native flowers in bloom along the way. Great views of the port and Geraldton. The foreshore walk is also a well maintained pathway along the beachfront - love the unusual design of the toilets at the end! Plenty of seats to stop and take in the view as well as playing areas for children and BBQs for family get togethers.

I had been working in the Kimberley at the Broome Visitor Centre for the past 3 years & as a traveller myself I am always attuned to what tourists want. What attracts them to visit certain locations etc. I had always promoted Geraldton because I enjoyed our time there as visitors in the past and was keen to pass on to fellow travellers what not to miss. Geraldtons foreshore has enjoyed a bit of a revitalisation since we were last there & while staying with relatives this time we were keen to check out all of the revamped foreshore art installations. "Horizon" was one that I had not heard about until we were taken to see it. Congratulations to the artists & to the City of Greater Geraldton for their great work. Wow, what a stunning attraction. It certainly generated quite a bit of interest at sunset with people arriving in time to capture a photo at this lovely time of night. Adequate off street parking, a wide meandering footpath, lovely lawns & picnic shelters nearby encourage locals & visitors to linger longer. We even returned the following morning for another look.
