This small country in western Africa has become more popular recently as a beach destination for European travelers. It’s a relatively short flight, there’s no time difference, and lodging is generally very affordable. River Island National Park in Banjul is fantastic for watching wildlife (especially the native baboons).

I visited reptile park with Black and White tours who were good. My guide from Black and White took great pictures. We were guided around park by their guide, a young girl who was good. I held a royal python, a baby crocodile and was lucky to hold a big rock python with their keeper.

This park contains a wide variety of birds.
What a wonderful experience feeding these small friendly monkeys, who take the peanuts directly from your hand. Make sure you take plenty with you and buy them (the ones still in their shells) before you arrive at the park, as this will be much cheaper.

This reserve contains about 295 species of birds.
My wife and visited the reserve recently, we are not birdwatchers but we both thought it was an amazing experience. We spent about two hours in the park with Park ranger and guide Lamin who had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the birds and surrounding reserve. We saw around 40 species in a relatively short space of time for a ridiculously small amount of money. A good tip is to get your taxi driver to pick you up at the opposite end of the park to where you started, you see a lot more as you don’t double back over similar ground. The terrain was easy and I gained the impression you could spend all day there if you were a keen birdwatcher. We saw Hornbills, sun birds, Bee Eaters, Six Ospreys, Caspian Terns etc etc

This comparatively small and easily accessible wildlife reserve is home to a number of indigenous African birds.
