The Salnés Valley is where most of the Albariño cellars under the appellation of origin Rías Baixas are located and the wines here have very distinctive characteristics due to the influence of the Atlantic and their unique canopy growing system of setting the vines, known as "parras". Juanjo leads this tour and can be adapted to your specific needs. The Albarino Wine Tour includes a visit to several wineries of all sizes from the largest cellars to the smaller but not the least important ones, all of them belonging to the denomination of origin Rías Baixas. So you will be able to not only see their facilities but also to talk to the winemakers directly, taste their wines, listen to their opinions and hear about their winemaking techniques that make their wines so different. Come and let us show you the Albariño of the Rías Baixas! You will also be able to enjoy a typical lunch at a "furancho" (an at one time clandestine wine producers) with homemade wine and local served dishes

After much research on the internet, we selected the “One day Rias Baixas private tour” offered by Tours of Galicia, and we could not have done better. Juanjo Cuenca is an expert tour guide, and more. He is a fount of knowledge, well-prepared, flexible, and knows how to read his clients. My wife and I have done winery tours in the United States, like Albariño, and we both speak Spanish. Our conversation with Juanjo shifted back and forth seamlessly between his excellent colloquial English and Spanish, as the situation required. We were picked up at our hotel in Santiago, on time, and proceeded to the Salnés valley for a tour of four wineries in Juan’s comfortable SUV, which had bottled water and rechargers for our phones. We visited two small and two medium-sized wineries. We learned about the grape, the vineyards, the harvesting, and differences in wine production, and creative ways wineries in Galicia are making the most of the Albariño grape. All offered tastings with snacks. In one we bought a surprisingly good sparkling Albariño (who knew there was such a thing?!!!), cosmetics, and a wine reduction jam. In another, we bought a bottle of delicious Galician grappa called “Orujo.” In a third, we bought three bottles of phenomenal Albariño. For lunch, Juanjo offered a couple of options, and we opted for a “furrancho,” an informal family-run eating establishment where the draw is the home-made Albariño. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was homey (a family came in all dressed as cowboys and girls, as it was carnival season), and the Albariño served in traditional saucers/cups was surprisingly good. Along the way, we talked constantly about the history and culture of Galicia, the topography, land tenure, economics, etc. Juanjo would point out salient features and sites, and he offered a few stops that were great: the “lonxa” at Cambados, where we were able to see the fishermen’s catch before the daily auction and the church of St. James in Padrón (where St. James’ remains arrived in Spain). We were very lucky, as the church of Santa María de Iria Flavia, where Nobel Price literature winner Camilo Jose Cela is buried, happened to be open. We were also lucky, as the weather was sunny and cool—not what you’d expect in late February. Having said that, it was Juanjo who made the day. We had high expectations, and they were exceeded in every way.

Juanjo took us on an amazing tour of the Albariño wine region. He took us to four vineyards that were unique and each made Albariño in a slightly different way. They were not commercial wineries and each one had an owner/winemaker whose passion for making Albariño shown through in their product. Juanjo took care and effort in selecting these places and really made the tour special. He has extensive knowledge of the region and was an excellent guide. For lunch, he offered us several options and we went with a local restaurant in a seaside town that had excellent seafood and was a good break in between wine tastings. The Pulpa a feira was delicious. I highly recommend Juanjo for a fantastic experience in Albariño wine country

Do you want to discover the history of one of the most valuable grapes in Galicia? The home of this excelent grape is in the Salnes valley where one of the most valued white wines in the world is produced every year. Its capital, Cambados, located pretty close to Pontevedra, is a land of nobles, Pazos (traditional Galician house) and wine tradition. This wine tradition has been passed generation by generation since the XII century, consequently, its local people, the special care they give to their vineyards throughout the year, as well as its privileged atlantic climate are essential factors in order to get a well balanced wine known as Albariño. Within the Route of Albarino we will visit some of the most important wineries in the area of Salnes where we will enjoy unbeatable views of the Ría de Arousa accompanied by a tasting of different Albariños that will not leave you indifferent. Finally, we will have a special picnic for you with local products in a charming area.
