Mirador Sicasumbre

Reviewed By L7768EQdavidd - Devon, United Kingdom

Thursday 26th November and we we driving from Pajara to La Pared and we were very pleasantly surprised to find this unusual Mirador along the way. We made are way up, the paved pathway and steps, to the Mirador, which took about 10 minutes. Initially the stone pathway is a gentle incline but becomes a sharp slope towards the top. There were small solar lights set into the path, which would be use at night to guide visitors to the top. On the pathway up to the astronomical view point, there is a small lookout area, with the statue of 2 goats and a stone star set into the ground. From here there are some incredible views across to the Cardon Mountain. It was extremely windy when we visited and rain was threatening so basically it was a quick up and down. Even though the weather was not that brilliant when we were here, we were treated to some incredible views across the Island. This is a unique Mirador as its  visitors would normally come here at night, with their telescopes and viewing equipment  to view the sky and all its treasures. The pathway, its small low walls and other structures have been constructed with an orange/brown stone which compliments the natural landscape. There are numerous information boards around giving details of where to look and what can be seen. There were some fittings for viewing equipment in place but the equipment had been removed.

An interesting journey through the history of the windmills in Fuerteventura. This unique experience will make you discover among other things the importance that was given to the grain from Prehistoric Times in the Island, the "Gofio" as an essential nutrient for the "Majorero" people over centuries or learning how to make the difference between a male or a female windmill.

We visited the windmill & information centre quite by chance & what a wonderful little place it is!We were briefly shown the rooms with some verbal information then left to our own devices to explore. The rooms & information are bilingual & have good pictures & models & there is a video to watch at the end.The windmill itself is lovely to explore & a great photo opportunity in the grounds. We had a demonstration of how to make ‘gofio’ & best of all tasted it! The best part of the visit was Gemma on the desk who initially welcomed us with a big smile & was so enthusiastic about the visitor centre. She was also kind enough to give us lots of information about places to visit on the rest of the island. This place is only small but well worth the €4 entrance fee. Our thanks to Gemma for a great visit .

Small and cozy museum where, however, it is explained in a very clear and visual way how mills worked in past centuries and how "gofio" (toasted cereal flour) was made in them. Thanks to the recreation of spaces (a 19th century kitchen, for example), as well as the multitude of details that we find in the museum, we transport ourselves to past centuries and imagine what life would be then. Finally, Gema, the museum guide, was very kind and enthusiastic explaining not only the history of the gofio and the mills, but also providing us with very useful information about the island. A highly recommended museum!

As a couple we like to explore local art galleries when we travel to get a feel for the local culture and artistic scene. We were fortunate to have followed our instincts to return to these gardens and galleries, after attempting to visit on a Sunday (closed). We loved the setting of the cacti gardens surrounded by desert hills and spent considerable time just soaking it all in. We found staff to be knowledgeable, proud and responsive. Even the history of the Casa Mane was interesting. Art wise, we first explored the 4 above ground galleries of with their rotating exhibits and were enthralled with subtle watercolours of Nuria del Pintos and the raised relief abstracts of Jose Melian. The unique, interesting underground galleries were filled with more permanent collections that showcased a wide variety of Canarian artists. Loved the motion in works by Mario Antigono. Wished we had wall space (and room in the suitcases) as we would have liked to be able to hang a couple of the works. In all, for only 5 Euros, we spent a delightful, informative 2 hours and would highly recommend a visit to this private arte center.

Nice lighthouse, reminds you of the old times with no GPS, seems historic. After long drives on the island, great place to walk around, observe the waves breaking, the lava shore, the sea gulls, enjoyable.
