From the very beginning, back in 1898, passion and curiosity led us to start the search for our own path, through the definition of our character and the pursuit of our unequivocal unique style. In our globalized age, we feel closer to the raising demand of knowledge and quality from both professionals and consumers. This demand is indeed a great opportunity for us to bring them closer to production, enhancing a wider knowledge as well as opinion sharing!
I knew Domenis as a customer since my favorite grappa by far is their Storica Nera. Its crystal clear taste, so powerful and at the same time rich of nuances and well rounded recalls a single adjective: gorgeous. Lately I met Cristina Domenis, the master distiller, and understood why this grappa is so outstanding. She is a distilled herself. Passion for the distillery that her family funded over a century ago and she lived since she was a child, excellence in technical and scientific skills (she has a PhD in Food Science with a thesis on the distillation process), but more than else an incredible sensibility that allows het to master the art of blending the different batches to obtain exactly the product that she has in mind. When you visit this small, traditional, not refurbished, real, intense, company, if you have the luck to be guided by Cristina, you discover an organization that is not just a business but a mix of love for the product, continuous quest for perfection and proud sense of achievement when she presents you her different "children": Storica Uve, Nera, Riserva, and her favorite the amazingly difficult Secolo. If you are a Grappa lover, this is definitely the benchmark.

We like to think of ourselves as ‘wine diviners.’ This concept, this image represents in a graphic fashion the amount of striving, of passionate commitment, and of sheer stubbornness that one needs in order to do well as a winegrower. The reason? It is true that a wine must be the offspring of a naturally-blessed growing area, but it is even more true that a special wine can only come into being as the creation of firm, experienced hands that know how to take full advantage of a millennia-old tradition. With the benevolent gaze of nature and the ceaseless labour of man as guides, this is the only path that will bring to light and into existence a treasure that is often hidden away, guarded jealously in the bowels of the earth. Yes, in real life, the diviner goes in search of just water. But the world of wine is not composed simply of objective realities; it also holds, in addition to much striving, so much poetry and arcane alchemies...

I arranged a tour on behalf of the Venetian Club of Detroit, since most members are from the Friuli area. First of all, our tour guide was amazing, giving us insights on the distillation process in both English and Italian. Back at the reception room we were treated to 5+ distinct and wondeful grappe with antipasti pairings. Since it was our great fortune to be there on the last day of the distillation, we were invited to a private celebration with the entire Nonino family with more food, wine and of course--more grappa. All in all, this is by far the best winery/distillery/brewery tour any of us has ever been on. That's saying a lot considering all of the tours we have taken throughout Europe and North America. We can't stop talking about it and it was certainly the highlight of our trip. This tour is highly, highly recommended not only for the quality and generous sampling of Nonino products, but also for the warm and welcoming nature of the Nonino family and their staff.

In a warm and welcoming atmosphere typical of mountain homes, the full range of grappas and other distillates made by Ceschia are available for purchase. There is also a selection of delicatessen products typical of Friuli. All these make unique gifts to take home and share with nearest and dearest. In addition, there is an extensive choice of Ramandolo wines bearing the D.O.C.G. quality designation.

Distilleria Pagura is the oldest distillery in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The grappa is produced with the old method with the ancient copper still. Visiting this distillery means to experience a proper time travel and to taste one of the best product our region has to offer.
