In the heart of Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a small city with a unique German flavor in its quaint bakeries, Hauptstrasse (Main Street) boutiques and generations-old peach orchards. Weekenders from nearby San Antonio and Austin have long appreciated the charm of the city's many B&Bs and "Sunday House" Inns. The surrounding Texas Hill Country is home to lush vineyards, making up one of the country's largest viticultural areas.

*Open Wed-Sun.Online ticket purchase only* Formerly the Nimitz Museum, the complex is now the only museum in the Continental United States centered on World War II's Pacific campaign. Since 1968, the Museum has expanded to occupy a six-acre campus and gained a reputation as one of the premier military museums in the nation. Over the years the Museum was upgraded and enlarged, and the campus grew to accommodate the Memorial Courtyard, the Plaza of Presidents and the Japanese Garden of Peace. We opened the expanded George H. W. Bush Gallery in 2009. The Gallery's state-of-the-art 33,000 square foot exhibition features 40 media installations, approximately 900 artifacts in 97 climate-controlled cases, 15 macro-artifacts, and hundreds of photographs. Two blocks east of the main campus is the Pacific Combat Zone. Recently reopened after an $8 million renovation. The PCZ is also home to our popular WWII Pacific Combat Program that takes place on set weekends throughout the year.
We had no idea this museum was in Fredericksburg - only an hour drive from Austin. My grandfather is a WWII vet who served in the Pacific, and the staff went above and beyond to help us honor him with a beautiful memorial in their gallery. They even gave me a rendering that I can provide to my grandfather, since he is too elderly to travel. We spent 5+ hours at the museum admiring the detailed and perfectly curated exhibits (including the remarkable oral history collected from veterans), and are so excited to come back when the renovated Admiral Nimitz Gallery reopens. Highly recommend!

This was a great place to visit if you're interested in art work from Texas. There were so many options - sculptures, paintings, and even giclee works. Most of it was too expensive for us, but it's worth your time to see the amazing talents of these individuals and the many hours of work put into their pieces. Cheaper than going to a museum and you get a lot of exposure to so much Texas art!!!

Artisans - A Texas Gallery represents Texas artists who create an array of fine art and fine craft that includes paintings, ceramics, fine furnishings, wood turnings, sculpture, jewelry, mosaic, glass and kinetic outdoor art. Artisans offers a wide range of artwork from functional to decorative with an emphasis on the highest level of quality and distinctiveness in every medium.
Hate going into stores with the same old stuff made who knows where. Love stores like this with works by local artists, well displayed, at reasonable prices. The shop was actually much larger than I thought when I first walked in. A great selection and variety of quality work.

Enjoy a self-guided tour of our grounds and glimpse into the daily lives of the German pioneers of the Texas Hill Country. Our 3.5 acre grounds, located in downtown Fredericksburg, feature historic homesteads and buildings donated by founding families of Gillespie County. Among the historic homesteads and buildings are: one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, Sunday house, blacksmith shop, bath house, barn, smokehouse. Each showcases artifacts and architecture which help to preserve and tell the story of these pioneers. Also, browse through our fire department museum which displays pieces of early 20th century firefighting equipment.
If you are a first time visitor to Fredericksburg this is the best place to start if you want to learn about the town and it’s German history. Admission is: $7.50 Adults; $3.00 ages 6-17; 5 and under free. Start with the excellent 15 minute video then tour the buildings at your own pace: a school, barn, blacksmith shop, summer house, smokehouse, cabin, two homes and fire engine display. Each building has audio recordings by locals that describe what you see. If you need to rest there are many benches to sit on. The restrooms were spotless and gift store small but nice. Check the website to see if there are any special events going on but even if there isn’t, this is a great place to visit.
