April 29, 2022 Russell Mellin

Located on Florida's Gulf Coast, Fort Myers offers its own great beaches as well as being surrounded by some 100 barrier and coastal islands to explore. The shelling is stupendous, and the nearby Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum is inspirational. The Great Calusa Blueway offers 40 miles of canoe and kayak trails.

My Dad and I visited back in October and there were so many dead sand dollars, we couldn’t fit them all in our hand. We suspected it was a phenomenon brought on by the red tide outbreak we had this year. Fortunately, the day we went it did not affect us. The beach is long, wide and has a lot of nature to observe along the trails, walkway, and on the shoreline. “Amenities include a two-mile (3 km) long beach on Lovers Key. Black Island has over five miles (8 km) of multiuse trails; bicycle, canoe, and kayak rentals, gazebo, picnic areas, boat ramp, and two playgrounds.” It is a beautiful place to see the sunset and get married. They had a huge tent set up complete with chandeliers right on the beach! There is a tram to carry you out to the beach or you can walk a long distance to the end. The tram leaves from the parking lot. There is a building that provides bathrooms and a gift shop with various small snacks & drinks. The park is open from 8:00 am till sundown year-round. There is a cost to get in is $8 unless the mode of transportation is larger or smaller than a standard vehicle. Well worth the trip!

Beautiful white sand beaches, warm water, excellent shelling, plethora of shore birds, and spectacular sunsets are the highlights of a visit to Fort Myers Beach. Staying on the beach at the Best Western Plus Beach Resort, we were within walking distance of the famous pier and the adjacent Times Square area with its many restaurants, shops and nightlife, most affordably priced. Fort Myers Beach made for a wonderful beach getaway that we fully enjoyed.

Bowditch Point Park

Reviewed By TheTwoHarbours - Brisbane, Australia

We absolutely loved visiting Bowditch Point Park. Although we enjoy the hustle and bustle of Ft Myers Beach and its many restaurants and bars, we enjoyed the quiet nature trails, soft sand, and wildlife of Bowditch more. Bowditch Point Park is a gem of a location and perfect for families, groups, or couples looking to get away from the noise and people-packed streets of the main drag of Estero Blvd and at the Fort Myers Pier. Only a 20 minute walk (5 min bike ride) from the pier, Bowditch boasts handicap accessible boardwalks and trails, restrooms, foot washes, picnic pavilions and wide open beach space with great views of the Sanibel Causeway and the Gulf. This would be a wonderful spot for a sunset! At low tide, walk the perimeter of the park along the beach and you will find tide pools filled with wildlife. We saw dolphin, starfish and crab! This area is also known for its saltwater birding and is at part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Manatee are also known to swim in these shallow waters on the bay side. Parking is $2/hour. Free bike racks are also available. The LeeTran Trolley stops at Bowditch and this is a great way to visit without paying to park if you don't have a bike or want to walk from the pier! The Trolley is free from Bowditch to the plaza and is also accessible.

Dog Beach

We found the beach very clean (no doggy liter). Such a nice place for our pets to run free and interact with their 4 legged friends. Our golden retriever had a blast! There is a wash off area as you exit to the parking lot on the right side. Unfortunately it is not a hose, so you will still have to bathe your pet when you return home.

Moss Marina has done an excellent job of putting in new floating docks and electrical upgrades and they are planning on adding another set of new docks. We spent 3 days over New Year's Eve weekend with family and friends on 3 boats. A lot of management and staff has changed and it shows as they are very accomodating. The current can be a little challenging at times docking but their staff is there to help. We like the convenience of many restaurants and beach access being within an easy walk. Mike
