Things to do in Florence, Tuscany: The Best Lessons & Workshops

January 31, 2022 Enriqueta Cusson

Florence is an art historian’s dream. The Galleria dell'Accademia bursts with works by Michelangelo, who is entombed within the frescoed walls of the Basilica di Santa Croce. Budding photographers can snap pics of the Ponte Vecchio bridge, and serious shoppers can spend a blissful afternoon wandering the shops of Piazza Santo Spirito. Tuscan cuisine pays homage to the region’s bounty. Swipe a hunk of crusty bread across a pool of local olive oil and you’ll be instantly transported to your happiest place.

InFlorence Academy

The school, the oldest state recognized school of foreign languages in Florence, can be found in Palazzo Guadagni, a Renaissance palace dating from the 16th century which is located in the middle of the old town centre near the Ponte Vecchio. The historic school building, renovated in 1992, has eleven classrooms, a multimedia learning centre, a lecture room and a student lounge and is in a quaint Italian quarter. The school is in the centre of the oldest part of Florence, 300 m from the Pitti Palace, 500 m from the Ponte Vecchio and about 15 minutes' walk from the cathedral (il Duomo) and from the railway station. The building is the work of the architect Cronaca and was built between 1502 and 1508. In the 1860's, it was extensively improved by the architect Poggi with the addition of beautiful frescoes. The school was completely renovated, taking care to enhance the original features but also making use of the best of modern Italian design to produce a stunning mix of new and old.

We just finished our third and final class In the IWS Prep course online with Rebecca, and it was executed flawlessly. We had the opportunity to buy a sampling of the wines we would be studying, and a case of them arrived well ahead of time, at a reasonable price. Rebecca then conducted the sessions on three consecutive Saturdays, and it was both informative and fun. We have previously gone on two separate private guided tours to Chianti Classico with Rebecca, and we have done the same in multiple other countries and multiple areas of the US with other tour operators. Without a question, Rebecca is the best anywhere at what she does, from our experiences. She is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, kind, flexible, fun... and focused on making sure that you enjoy your time with her. I cannot recommend her strongly enough for in-person tours (when we can do that again), online classes, or shipping a great selection of wines (and olive oil and other items) quickly and affordably.

-----English----- If there is a person who is looking for a school to study the Italian language in Florence I want to recommend Centro Machiavelli. All of the teachers are very friendly and charming. It is impossible to compare them. If there is a question or a new concept, they explain everything with great care and look for a way to make you understand as easily as possible. They keep in mind how different people learn and use that to the advantage of the student. Students come to this school from all of the world, so you could make friends with people from all sorts of places. I am sure that if I wouldn't have left my country that I would not have met so many wonderful people. And although on the first day I was a beginner, thanks to the school I succeeded in making friends with Italians. I also was able to do an internship and use the skills and language that I have learned in practice. There are many opportunities to learn more about Florence, Italy, the Italian culture and Italian foods from the school's wonderful guide, Rima. I think that Machiavelli has a special character. I wish for everyone to have such a wonderful experience at Centro Machiavelli!!
