Time seems to stand still in Evora, a well-preserved medieval town that features protective walls, a 13th-century cathedral, several palaces, and a 1st-century Roman temple. No surprise that the town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even though it’s kind of creepy, don’t miss the Chapel of Bones, where the remains of nuns and monks are arranged in a haunting mosaic.

We scheduled a tour for a morning in April, and were surprised to find that the vintner has incorporated a beautiful old home into the winery. The chapel was our favorite part, complete with wine barrels and a barn owl. The wines were great and they were kind enough to set up an outdoor tasting.

The new base for Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo is well laid out with a good range of tools, multimedia and others, to provide an introduction to the subject. We were treated royally by Teresa. Apart from lots of valuable information about Alentejo and the great wines of the region we received personal insights from Teresa that were very helpful. Plus the wine tasting was fun. Definitely a stop to add to your time in Évora.
