Thattekkadu Bird Sanctuary

Love the place. Hot and humid, just as the birds love it. We saw over 130 species of birds. Its a bird watchers paradise. The place is clean, little garbage near the towns, but the forests are clean. Forests where you can walk on foot is bliss. I have never seen trees that were as tall as they were in Thattekkad. The highlight of the birding trip was the Srilankan Frogmouth, the Wood Owl and the Bay Owl. If you are a birder, this is the place to be.

Paniyeli Poru

Reviewed By Chat2Binod - Kochi (Cochin), India

We reached early ~ 0830 in the morning and were the 1st to reach the place. We were greeted by friendly lot of security who assisted us in parking and ticketing. We were explained that water levels were low as bhoothan kettu dam has been closed early in the morning, however venturing out too much was a risk, as no warnings would be given out during non season times. We started the short walk towards the poru accompanied by 2 securities. The walk was a good one through the serene and quiet forest atmosphere. It was disturbing to see plastic covers high up in the tree - we were told that flood waters has taken it up there. In the way we saw foot prints of the gentle giant, apparently an elephant had crossed through our path way yesterday night. We soon reached a bathing spot which the security said is safe. We spend the the next 2 hours frolicking in the water The season starts in mid of Jan and we would reckoned you to visit during season only so as to explore the maximum. Temporary bridges are made during this time which allow you to venture deeper into the poru.

Matsyafed Fish Farm

Reviewed By ShiyasRehman - Aluva, India

Njarakkal, Vypin, Matsyafed Fish Farm is a nice place for a short day trip and to spend few hours. We reached there around lunch time and the place was crowded owing to the summer vacation season. We were a group of seven adults and six kids.. Started off by having a yummy kerala lunch which is part of the visit package. We ordered additional fish dishes by making extra payment and the food was really yummy ( though it was a bit on the higher spicy side)..After lunch we walked around the farm and spent some time relaxing on the hammocks.. They provide "Choonda" and fish food so that one could try fishing.. It's an enjoyable exercise and kids really loved it.. Could see some people managing to catch few fishes but we did not have any luck with that.. After some relaxation and fishing, towards evening we took the speed boat ride which is on extra payment but that was worth it.. We could see fishes jumping out of water near our boat and this was wonderful to watch... Overall we all enjoyed the the four hours we spent there and i would recommend this place for family day visit..
