In this tour we will visit the National Palace of Queluz, built in the 17th century by Peter, the brother of King Joseph I, it became a royal palace when he married his niece Maria, daughter of the king. It was the venue of the great festivals of the idle and rich nobility, of bullfights, fireworks, music concerts and sumptuous dancing serenades. This palace witnessed the dramatic moments that preceded the escape of the royal family to Brazil during the first Napoleonic invasion and the birth and death of the emperor of Brazil Pedro I, as well. In Mafra we visit the palatial complex composed of two palaces, a convent and a basilica that was built by King John V between 1717 and 1734. This magnanimous work was built unimaginably far from Lisbon and consumed gigantic resources. Leaving Mafra and before coming back to Lisbon we'll still have time to visit Ericeira, a traditional fishing village also known by its wonderful beaches and the surf spot.

Henrique was our guide for a delightful day designed around our specific interests and temporarily limited mobility. We visited Estoril ( where we learned "Casablanca" was filmed), Cascais, a mountain viewpoint in the Serra da Sintra National Park with spectacular views of the coastline, Sintra itself but briefly because of the crowds, and on the way home, the Queluz Palace. Our day was all the more interesting because with his extensive knowledge of Portuguese history Henrique was able to put everything we saw into a more comprehensive context. Regrettably we don't know Portuguese so his facility with foreign languages was a vital contributor to our enjoyment. The day was also a wonderful eating experience because of Henrique's familiarity with the region, including a morning espresso and traditional pastry at Cascais and delicious lunch at at a restaurant where we are pretty sure the other guests were entirely Portuguese. Without hesitation we thoroughly recommend taking tours with Henrique!

Not really used to take a private tour, but the experience was great Service was perfect, we highly recommend Goncalo!

We will start this tour of the coastal and rural villages outside Lisbon with a visit to Queluz National Palace and Gardens. Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and ocean, before driving to the fishing village of Ericeira, where you can taste fresh seafood and fish pulled straight from the ocean. Although one of the most popular surf destinations in Europe, with large scale 20th-century developments, Ericeira has managed to maintain its characteristic atmosphere. In the afternoon, go to Mafra National Palace, which benefited greatly from Portugal’s adventures in Brazil and boasts sumptuous Baroque buildings and a major library. It was here that the Nobel prize-winning author, José Saramago was inspired to write his best-known novel, “Baltasar and Blimunda,” set around the construction of the Convent of Mafra.

Diana @ Ride For You was an amazing guide and she is the main reason our trip turned out to be so wonderful. We are a family with 2 small children (2.5yrs and 5 months) and she completely took care of us - from helping with children, to explaining the sights, driving us to different parts of the area, being super flexible and helpful, great English language skills, recommending what is best for us, etc. Highly recommended! Thank you Diana, from Ivan, Maja and family :)

Our fourth day out with Rui- this time he took us South toward Evora, stopping first in the picturesque village of Arraiolos where tapestry rugs have been crafted since the 16th century. A wander through the village and tapestry studios made us feel as though we had stepped back in time. A feeling that remained as we visited Evora with its remarkable Roman remains. But our travel through time continued even further back as, in the late afternoon we arrived at the Almendes Cromlech - a megalithic double stone circle, the finest in Portugal and reportedly one of the oldest in Europe. Because it’s off the beaten track, down a rutted and difficult to navigate lane passing through groves of cork trees, the site doesn’t receive many visitors. We had it all but to ourselves as the sun began to set, casting sunbeams and shadows all around. Truly magical! As always, Rui recommended a great little restaurant for lunch in Evora and conveyed us safely home to Galamares at the end of the day..

We had a wonderful day with Francisco in Sintra and surrounding areas. He gave us great advice, helped us avoid the crowds, and was very smart. His car is very nice and he is a really smart guy. He does a great job of gauging his audience by pacing the trip in a great way.
