The Eastern Cape is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are Port Elizabeth and East London. It was formed in 1994 out of the Xhosa homelands of Transkei and Ciskei, together with the eastern portion of the Cape Province. Landing place and home of the 1820 settlers, the central and eastern part of the province is the traditional home of the Xhosa people.

We were greeted by a very warm friendly curator, watched a wonderful film on some of Walter's life. We then saw an excellent collection of his works on 2 floors of what was the family hotel. This museum with gift Shop is the highlight of Somerset East and well worth the visit.. absolute gem.

We are very happy to have managed to visit The Reinet House, early in the morning, before our departure. It's a lovely Cape Dutch house with large, high ceiling rooms, filled with history. The house, which is now a museum, was built in the early '80's as a parsonage. Rev. Andre Murray, from Scotland, first lived in it and then, following his death, his son, Charles Murray. We found the museum very informative and definitely recommend a visit. Happy to see the vine Rev. Charles Murrary planted in 1870, still alive and green
