Spirit of Scotland Monument

Reviewed By macedonboy - Glasgow, United Kingdom

Two battles were fought here in the Wars of Scottish Independence, a 1307 victory led by Robert the Bruce and one considered unhistorical by William Wallace. It look like Wallace won because this monument has sculpture depicting a silhouette of Wallace. At 5 metres high, it's a bit exaggerated.

The Burns And Wilson Monument

Reviewed By macedonboy - Glasgow, United Kingdom

This is an unusual Burns monument in that it also honours John Wilson, a printer who was responsible for printing the Kilmarnock Edition of Burns first set of published poems. The monument has been sculptured with a classical theme. The monument has full sized bronze sculptures of both Burns and Wilson, dressed as gentlemen of the 18th century, but with pose and cloaks in the Greco-Roman style. To round off the classical them, the ensemble also has a bust of Apollo and Hermes next to the two men. I liked the allusion to the poet and the messenger.

Reformers Monument

Reviewed By Scottish-Hidden-Gems - Irvine, United Kingdom

This is a very meaningful monument, yet very simple in design. It commemorates when the men of kilmarnock asked for voting to be reformed in parliament as only 1 person in the whole town could vote. Situated in the grounds of kay park, definitely worth a look!

Jean Armour Statue

Reviewed By Scottish-Hidden-Gems - Irvine, United Kingdom

This is a lovely statue of Jean Armour (Robert's Burns wife) Which sits in the centre of Mauchline (her home town). Its part of the mauchline heritage trail, which takes you through the town to visit lots of interesting and important places in Robert Burns life. Its definitely worth spending a few hours in Mauchline.
