The capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dusseldorf is a regional economic powerhouse straddling the banks of the Rhine River. Altstadt is not just Dusseldorf's lovely old town, but also where the city's nightlife is based and where Altbier, its native dark beer, is plentiful. Dusselforfians take their beer seriously. Königsallee (Ko to the locals), Dusseldorf's famous shopping street, has many high-end stores. And the Museum Kunst Palast has one of the Rhineland's best art collections.

This is a wonderful open air market in the Altstadt area of Dusseldorf. Many businesses ranging from fruit and vegetables vendors to delicious eateries and wine bars. Our favorite eatery is the Pahlke Feine Fischkost where one can enjoy either fish pasta salads or tasty codfish with vegetables. If you are free for lunch this is the place to come. Also there are vendors who sell thuringer, bratwurst and curry wurst with pommes frites (chips). All in all a very pleasant place to experience. This should be on your "to do" list when visiting Dusseldorf. M. Greg Miller Millersville, Pennsylvania, USA

Everyone knows someone who loves mustard, the hotter the better. I’m not one, but have a friend who is – so went Xmas shopping in Dusseldorf, the home of Mustard. Dusseldorf mustards are similar to Dijon mustard with flavours ranging from mild to hotter (they use vinegar) than Dijon, and they are darker in color. It all apparently depends on the type of mustard seed used. Dusseldorf mustards are also not as sweet as Bavarian mustard. Dusseldorf was site of Germany’s first mustard factory which dates there from 1726, the ABB brand, which whilst still the center for mustard production, was acquired by Lowensenf during the l960s. The Sinfladen shop/museum is open from 10am daily and has tastings, exhibits and sourvenirs + of course one can buy mustard. They even sell a lovely ceramic jar to house a certain size of mustard pot; sadly mine did not travel well in my suitcase home so my friend only got half his Xmas present. I also purchased a very mild variety for myself and have enjoyed it. So if you like mustard or know someone who does, go visit and have the experience.
