After meeting at Adriatik Hotel lobby, we will start our walking tour at the main square "Liria”. At the beginning of the tour, you will come across some fine specimens of the city's architecture dating back to the 1930's. Visit the Roman Amphitheatre from the 2nd century AD. Built during the reign of Emperor Trajan, this is one of the biggest amphitheaters in the Balkans. Walk down the seaside promenade enjoying the fresh air and the view of the largest bay in Albania. The Byzantine Chapel is our next stop. An early Christian chapel built on the side of the Amphitheatre, the chapel's western alcove preserves a unique polychromatic mosaic representing old, Christian iconography. L Then head to the Venetian Tower, where a flight of stairs will take you to the roof and give you some of the best views of this old city, there you can relax and have a coffee break.

Vlore is a harbour city that holds special meaning for Albanians, as this is where the country declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire at the start of the 20th century. So you can take a whistle-stop tour of monuments and museums celebrating the statesman Ismail Qemali’s first government, and in doing so get to know a little more about what it means to be Albanian. If you’d like ideas for days trips the wider region is both untamed and beautiful.

It's a daily trip of two cities the most important in terms of history and culture in Albania. Rich in history and tradition, Kruja is home of the patriots and the epicenter of Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Shkodra is the cradle of the most important Albanian poets, like Migjeni, painters like Kol Idromeno, and photographers, the Marubi Family. Shkodra houses the haunting Marubi National Photography Museum, which displays the first photo taken in Albania.

We did not pick Dorien Malaj as our guide in Albania; we were matched up by one of the travel industry’s many anonymous middle men—but the moment we actually met Dorien, we knew we had gotten lucky. He was quick to identify our particular interests and to adjust accordingly. Our focus in Albania was their “accursed mountains” in the north east. We expected that in getting from Dubrovnik to Albania, Montenegro would be little more than a “drive through”. However, Dorien took us on a stunning mountain route that included the two beautiful but very different towns of Kotor and Cetinje, which really put Montenegro on the map for us, an added bonus. Dorien was so well-informed and happy to share both the hard facts and the subtle cultural nuances we were observing. His interactions with local people were very interesting to observe, and his background in Psychology gave him an interesting perspective, greatly enhancing our experience. His personal interests were so varied and wide, and that made looking through his eyes very stimulating for us and made conversation very productive. There was no subject off limits—about either Albania or the US. Dorien has a nice sense of humor that seemed to match ours…so that we had lots of fun together, too. It was a very easy and open relationship.
