Husband and I aren’t big forest hikers, (I’m always worried about ending up lost lol!) but staying local and reading about all the lovely walks in the area - we decided to try here. We did the cairn walk, and really enjoyed it!! such a lovely way to get out there and see nature. Easy to follow posts, and was in awe when we reached the loch. Great clear paths, it’s surprising how quick it gets dark! but loved the peace and quiet. Visited the centre for a cold drink, few people here and there but pretty quiet. Plenty of parking. We also visited the wildlife hide, beautiful birds of all kinds. Really enjoyable few hours, we’ll be back :)

Visited the red deer range after recently taking up photography. I googled where to photograph wildlife in my area and this popped up. I had a fantastic time. At first there didn't seem to be any deer around so I went for a short walk along the path and was thinking oh well I don't think this is my day. Back in the hide I thought one last look then I will go and nearly jumped out of my skin when I opened the window and the big stag grunted with his nose right at the window. They blend in so well with their surroundings but clearly love to come down to the feeding area in the hope of picking up a few carrots. Three of them hung around for a long time allowing plenty of photo opportunities. Would be a great place also to take kids. Don't forget your carrots !

So after being told by a government that couldn’t care less about me that I have to be a key worker (food retail) the last 8 months have been awful. We decided we needed to get away from where we live and people. We stayed in Annan and decided to take a trip to Mabie Forest. Once we parked up (£3) and hit the trails we didn’t see another soul until we returned to the car. Despite constant rain the absolutely fabulous scenery more than made up for the weather. The dog was exhausted and so were we. Some pretty tough hill climbs and plenty of picnic spots (weather permitting). People have already covered the lack of dog poo bins so I won’t go into that. I have no issues with the fact you have to take your own rubbish with you. All in all a lovely day out in the fresh air.

We opted to do the 1hr circular walk which takes you along the river bank and into the woodland. The scenery is spectacular. Its a easy walk and well directed. Great walk for all. There is a small café/shop in the car park too.
