Things to do in Dubrovnik, Dalmatia: The Best Historical & Heritage Tours

December 4, 2021 Tonie Szymanski

Dubrovnik has recovered from the war damage it suffered during the 1990s, and visitors have returned to this tranquil city. Nestled between the Adriatic and the Dinaric Alps, it’s an accessible and affordable city break for many European travelers. The pedestrian-only Old Town is especially charming.

Stroll the best-preserved medieval fortified city in the world with a local, born in the very heart of it. Get introduced to the major city sights, evoke the glorious past times of the Republic of Dubrovnik and, at the same time, experience the real heartbeat of less than 1000 locals that still live within the City Walls. This small place, known for its diplomacy, commerce and shipbuilding, was a well-organized city. Almost every aspect of the social life was regulated already in the 14th c. Water supplying and sewage system, health service and garbage disposal service were organized and regulated. At the same time, peek into the hidden corners, in narrow and steep streets, where you will discover a real life of a small community that still lives in the UNESCO site in ancient homes, struggling with stairs and crowds, coping with strict conserving regulations and demands of tourism, balancing between the history and modern life. The tour can be extended for a walk over the City Walls.

Tour was amazing, tour guide Andro who is also an owner of the tour company was fantastic. It was raining really bad during our tour he took us to a cafe to wait for rain to pass a bit and after he tried to fit everything in for us to have best experience. He was on time and was flexible with time because our cruise was a little late on time originally schedule for a tour. He made sure we were happy and wanted my kids and I to go places we wanted and answered all the questions we had plus had such a great knowledge of the history of the region. Made my girls and I fall in love with Montenegro thanks to Andro. I highly recommend this tour you will be highly satisfied! If I could give it 10 stars I would!

A walk over the city walls of Dubrovnik is a must-do for every visitor. This beautifully preserved walled city, surrounded by battlements erected over several centuries. Six metres deep in some places, the walls are dotted with forts looking out to both sea and land. Within, baroque churches and grand palaces speak of the splendour of a town that was once a wealthy republic in its own right. Listen to surprising facts, exciting legends and funny tales. All this while enjoying stupendous views of the sparkling Adriatic and the town skyline.  Learn about the past, turbulent events from more recent times and get to know Dubrovnik's Old Town from a different perspective.

I've had the pleasure of doing 2 tours with these guys: the Dubrovnik city tour and the day trip to Montenegro. I have done my share of tours over the years, and I can honestly say these have been the most informative, well thought, entertaining and fun of them all. It is rare to find people born and raised in the old town of Dubrovnik and it is even more difficult to find people with the knowledge, passion and professionalism that Ivo and Stjepan bring to the table. I could have spent a week listening to the history of both Dubrovnik, Montenegro, Yugoslavia, etc and to all the anecdotes, facts and personal experiences. Truly outstanding. Thanks again for two fabulous days!

Most often you will read that Korčula is the city of Marco Polo. It is true, but it is also so much more! Korčula’s records of time date back to the Neolithic period. Legend says that fairy-tale Korčula was home to the beautiful Greek mythology hero, Kerkyra. It is even said to be named after her. These days Korčula presents a connection to nature and beautiful beaches, amongst them is also the “Croatian Santorini”. It shows thousands of years of culture, history, and tradition. Hundreds of years old oil groves, vineyards, and fruit and vegetable productions assure you that you will eat good and local in Korčula. Memories of the great Croatian singer Oliver Dragojević, who was born in Korčula, keep lovely dalmatian music and atmosphere on every step. While enjoying a glass of wine, of course.

Inclusions: Pick-up and drop-off at your location in Dubrovnik City area, Van/car ride professional guide and driver, Boat ride to Korčula, Guided tour of Korčula, Wine tasting in traditional Pelješac wine cellars

My one day tour of Montenegro has a very tight schedule. The tour starts from Dubrovnik driving south alongside Adriatic coast passing cities of Cavtat and Konavle region and soon cross the border to Montenegro (do not forget your passports). The tour is driving alongside the Kotor bay (Europe’s most southern fiord) stopping for a photo-stop in front of magical Perast – city of Seamen and 2 small islands with churches (St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks). Finally reach the city of Kotor, nested in the very bottom of Kotor bay surrounded by formidable verticals of neighboring mountains. After Kotor we drove through Vrmac tunnel to the outer coastal part with long beaches and open sea reaching Budva – one of the oldest cities in the whole Adriatic, with charming City Center, and marina for megayachts – today being top tourist destination for younger travelers with all the fun it offers. After Budva we started our return not going alongside Kotor Bay but crossing it by ferry, stopping along the way for photos and refreshments, crossing the border to Croatia and reaching Dubrovnik in the late evening hours.

Ante was our guide, and we had a lovely experience with his warm friendliness and wealth of information on history and culture in Dubrovnik. The tuktuk was electric so it was not loud so we could hear him clearly, and it is also eco-friendly which was a plus. A great evening spent looking at the breathtaking views Dubrovnik had to offer. Highly recommend.

On this 3 hour long unforgettable journey you will be taken through the history of Dubrovnik - from its very beginning, to the point where this glorious city, became filming location for Game of Thrones. From the Ottomans, Napoleon, the Balkan War and now into modern Croatia, you will discover how Dubrovnik has adapted to face difficult challenges throughout its history, surviving between competing empires by practicing the art of religious tolerance, trade, deception and spy-craft! On top of this, you will be provided a real insight into how the globally popular TV show ‘Game of Thrones’ was made and the impact that it had on the city, with GoT trivia that even non-GoT fans can enjoy. On the tour we hit all of the big sites of Dubrovnik as well as all the GoT filming locations in the Old City! We'll go from one end of the old town to the other, with water breaks if necessary, well-chosen shaded spaces and beautiful vistas of the city and it's glorious architecture.

My husband and I went on the "Game of Thrones and Old City Tour," with Jelena. She sent a message through Trip Advisor the day before giving specific instructions of the location we were meeting and providing her phone number in case of being unable to find the place. She was very knowable of Croatia's History and gossip around the filming of "Game of Thrones." She was funny and Whitty, we enjoyed the tour a lot. Thank you, Jelena!

Dubrovnik is an amazing city by day, but by night it is absolutely supreme. The beauty of the city comes to surface even more when the sun goes down and the public lights turn on.  Architecture is radiant, streets are not as crowded as they are during the day and it will be a completely different experience for you as you listen to some other stories about the life of medieval Ragusa.

My husband and I had a private tour with Michaela. It was the perfect introduction to Dubrovnik. We learned so much about the town’s history, the Homeland war, and of course the Game of Thrones filming locations and stories about the sets and cast. Michaela was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. It was an absolute delight to spend the afternoon with her!!
