Welcome to the Nature Island. Remote, affordable and, as yet, unspoiled, Dominica deserves more than a day's visit from your cruise ship. Spend a week (or more) exploring mountains covered by tropical rainforest, endless hiking trails, some 40 dive sites and black-sand beaches. You'll soon be plotting ways to return every year.

The descendants of the Caribs, the first inhabitants of Dominica, or Waitukubuli, as they called it, live in eight villages in this reservation.
The descendands of the natives are still living their, following the rules of their ancestors. We had the opportunity to eat their food, to admire their dances and to visit a small shop of souvenirs. Overhelming!

This English colonial fort is among the ruins found at the Cabrits Historical and Marine Park, which preserves remnants of the islands tumultuous history.
If you enjoy seeing some of the islands history from the 17 and 1800's then you need to walk through the excellently restored Fort Shirley. While there take the walk up to the ruins of the commandants home or out to the ruins of the Douglas bay battery where you'll find cannons still laying in the original battlements.

A historic cobbled square often crowded with vegetable vendors.
We stopped back to pick up a few fruits to munch on before returning to our cruise, as it was near the dock. Delicious!
