Today the capital city and cultural center of Iowa is revitalized. A versatile destination everyone will enjoy, Des Moines has an itinerary for almost every interest. Culture and art enthusiasts may want to roam through the Des Moines Art Center, spend the weekend museum-hopping or attend a Broadway-caliber performance at the Civic Center. Golfers can spend their time and energy teeing up at any of the area's fine championship courses. The Blank Park Zoo and the Iowa State Fairgrounds should be on the list for families. And gardeners will savor the fantastic blooms at the Botanical Center and the Better Homes and Gardens Test Garden. Mix it up a little and sample all this "big city with a small town heart" has to offer.

I attended the season opener all-Tchaikovsky program and the Grieg Piano Concerto/Dvorak Symphony No 8 program recently. Both were so enjoyable. I would recommend the DSM Symphony to anyone, even people who think they don’t enjoy classical music. It is so much fun to watch the soloists, conductor, and orchestra, not to mention listening to the glorious music.

The Des Moines Playhouse, using all-volunteer casts and crews, presents a full season of musicals, dramas, comedies, and family shows each year. The shows represent the best of Broadway present and past, with professional quality sets, costumes and acting at a price nearly everyone in the community can afford. But The Playhouse isn’t merely an entertainment venue. A commitment to education extends beyond opportunities for the community to get involved behind-the-scenes with the shows. The Playhouse has an extensive education department, providing classes for all ages, opportunities through Spectrum Stories and the national Penguin Project (beginning in 2022), and outreach programs for schools and community centers. The Playhouse is one of the largest and oldest continuously-operating theatres in the United States.

Our immensely popular shows are set in the present day and are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not. In many instances, guests are seated with the performers and don't even realize it until they die...the performers, that is! At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime.
A brand new, independent comedy club in downtown Des Moines focusing on local and regional stand-up and improv comedy.
