Things to do in Denali National Park and Preserve, Denali National Park and Preserve: The Best Bus Tours

December 8, 2021 Stefan Strunk

Denali National Park and Preserve is most famous for being the home of Mount McKinley, also called Denali, meaning "The Great One." At 20,320 feet, Mount McKinley is the highest peak in North America. The park, which is larger than the state of Massachusetts, has only one road, making it the perfect backcountry adventure. Try to spot The Big Five: moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves and grizzly bears.

We did an all day tour in Grand Teton National Park with Kelsie and Jeff. BEST DAY EVER! The day started off with them picking us up at our hotel at 0545 sharp! Beautiful weather. Our day was filled with sightings; moose, elk herd, bison, grizzly mom & cub, lone grizzly, 2 fox, white tail deer, mule deer, grouse, bald eagles, red wing hawks, kestrel and many more small birds which Jeff could identify by their call. The breadth of their combined knowledge is truly amazing. We learned so much about the local wildlife, park ecosystem, geological information about the Grand Tetons and local history. We finished the day with lunch at Dornan’s restaurant at Moose Junction. Lots of good humor and good food. It is my opinion, everyone who visits this area would benefit from one of the tours offered. You’ll be in good hands.

I want to preface my review of Alaska Backcountry Adventure Tours of Denali National Park by saying as a former shuttle bus driver in Denali National Park and a Park Service employee there I have an intimate knowledge of Denali and what to expect from a guided tour of Denali. I was acting as a tour guide of Alaska for my wife as she had never been to the state and the tour of Denali was to be one of our highlights. We were not disappointed. Our driver Justin was extremely knowledgeable about the geology, plant life, wildlife, and history of Denali and Kantishna. He was very personable, excellent at spotting game, a good driver, and very accommodating at stops for photos of game and Denali. Yes the mountain was out in all it’s glory and we took lots of pictures. We saw an unusually high amount of game. We viewed 25 bears, 22 Dall sheep, 40-50 caribou, 3 cow moose, marmots, eagles, ground squirrels, voles, and falcons. We had close ups of bull caribou and bears next to the bus. The 92 mile trip to Kantishna takes 6 hours and when we arrived at Backcountry Lodge in Kantishna we had a 2.5 hour layover with lunch and activities. The lunch served was ample and tasty. The activities were gold panning, historical walk, or botanical walk. We then made the 6 hour return trip back to the park entrance. I highly recommend taking snacks, drinks, camera, binoculars, insect repellent, sunglasses, hand sanitizer. Masks are required. It was the tour of a lifetime and absolutely worth every penny. I highly recommend Alaska Backcountry Adventure Tours and no I am not a paid spokesperson. The Enrights
