Holycross Abbey

Reviewed By Bozeman-Dublin - Trim, Ireland

The beautiful 12th century abbey at Holycross on the backs of the River Suir is enchanting. It's a working church still today which makes it all the more wonderful to visit. The interior walls are whitewashed with high vaulted ceilings with lovely wooden cross beams. What makes it so unique is the incredible sloping floor. There is a serious hill down from the door to the altar! I honestly don't think I've been in a religious building quite like it. Wonderfully serene and the stained glass windows really add to the atmosphere. The exterior is equally lovely with a largely intact cloiser and beautiful stone facades. It's free to enter although there is a donation box which they politely ask that you consider supporting. Its a worthy cause too as it's a wonderful place.

Moor Abbey

My husband and I came across this abbey completely by accident. I am so glad we did. No one was there, and we enjoyed exploring these beautiful ruins. It has a fascinating history.

9. St. Ruadhan's Dominican Friary

Lorrha E45K319 Ireland +353 90 974 7009 http://www.killaloediocese.ie/parish/lorrha-and-dorrha/

The Dominican Friary was built in 1269. It is rectangular and about 6m tall. The fenestration at the choir end is interesting- the lancets are in pairs, not singular, but regularly spaced. there was a stone screen or pulpitium but apparently no tower- midway in the length of the church. As an example of early Irish architecture in terms of size- it is almost as large as any 13th religious remains.
