Located at the mouth of Strangford Lough on the Lecale side is a former NATO Radar Station lost in the wilderness. The walk includes the secluded Killard bay with its cliff faces with nesting birds. Views from here extend to the Isle of Man which is only as far away as Belfast. As it is a headland the main access points is at Mill Quarter with the second at Ballyhornan both on the Ballyhornan Scenic Loop just off the A2 road. Parking is available at both locations.

Very small but Brilliant friendly informative place to learn all about sea life but mainly lobsters. Cheap as chips. Underutilised simply due to funding. Stacey is an amazing person placed perfectly between seascope and tourist information. Extremely friendly and engaging with children I hope stacey will continue to work here.

The Observatory is situated on Old Lighthouse Island, or the ‘Bird Isle’, as it is known locally. The Island is 40 metres high and 16 hectares (40 acres) in area, with a cliff on the east side and fairly gentle slopes elsewhere leading to a rocky shoreline. For most of the visiting season, the Island is covered by lush vegetation including elder scrub, bracken, Himalayan balsam, nettles, bluebells, narcissi and campion. The Island is an excellent place for newcomers to birdwatching. It is the only place in Northern Ireland where rare passerines turn up with any regularity. Visitors can participate in the trapping and ringing of birds and get a chance to see them at close quarters. Apart from the birds, the Island is available as an ecological study centre and, we hope, is a valuable educational resource for all levels of student. There is accommodation for up to 23 overnight visitors in the converted ruins of the old lighthouse.

From the car park we took the right hand boardwalk to the beach then followed the shoreline right round the peninsular and back inland to the road bridge. It was high tide and very wet, but was just manageable . The sea walk was spectacular, as the big waves crashed in. Seals basked on the opposite shore, oblivious to the sound of gunfire from the military firing range. A stunning 2hr circular walk despite the heavy rain on the way back!

Really lovely spot with lots to see, and contrary to a few other comments, we found the cafe to be excellent, staff were kind and courteous, found the food reasonably priced and tasty. Good way to spend a day out with the family

Parked up near Island for a wander across the causeway to the island, unfortunately the tide prevented this. However, the view alone from the car park made this trip worthwhile, stunning, simply stunning. Strangford Lough is beautiful, and a must for a visit to Belfast.

It says not to feed the birds, but please DO as they love it and will eat it all up. Great place for the young and old alike. I love feeding the ducks and looking out over the pond - very relaxing.
