Waterfall la Piedra del Indio

Traveling from Arenal to Monteverde we passed a sign for Waterfall la Piedra. We met Alejandro who offered us a tour of an ancient rock and waterfall located on his family property. The views and waterfall were spectacular! He pointed out many unusual plants and their medicinal uses and gave us a brief history of his family's farm which we found extremely interesting. Bring a camera and hiking shoes. The mosquitoes we liked the least so be sure to wear long pants and bring pest repellant. We spent an amazing time with this engaging young man and this was the highlight of our trip.

Booked at our resort through Jacamar tours. Pick up at resort early morning for an interesting drive to the attraction (what they call the Costa Rican massage on some bumpy roads for about half the trip). Our Jacamar driver Daniel and Sensoria guide John were both very informative and knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and were very good at spotting wildlife that we would have missed. Blue waterfalls, wet pools and a thermal pool flowing down from Rincon de la Vieja so bring a swim suit. Would suggest being in reasonable shape for the 3 hour hike and a very good bug spray. Nice lunch at the end of the hike.

These two brothers were wonderful guides and are amazing stewards of the land. We saw so much! So glad we went. Prepare with bug spray and a good head lamp or flash light. At the end Humberto's family provided warm hospitality and we heard Enrique's stories. Don't use a tour company. This is the authentic CR experience!

Oropendola Warterfall

This was a side escursion we took at the end of our trip, and wish we could have spent more time here. It was recommended by several locals we met in Tamarindo. It was an easy, short hike, sidewinding down to a serene area with a cystal clear pool under the waterfall. There was a ladder to use to get into the water--it felt amazing! Only wish we had more time to spend swimming there under the waterfall. Don't forget to dress to swim! It's an easy hike, but not sure if I would reccomend this for families with small children. The ladder is steep and the rocks can be a little slippery. It would be a great escursion for couples or families with teens.

We visited from manuel antonio. It was a long drive (1hr 10min) but well worth it for the waterfall views, hanging bridges and most of all swimming. Oh and a wonderful lunch. Give yourself 2hrs before lunch if you like to swim at the two falls, otherwise you can easily hike the trails in an hour. We did self guided because we were here to swim not view wildlife. The trails are well marked and short so no need for a guide unless you looking for wildlife. Hanging bridges are fantastic, really high up, great view falls, solidly engineered. The drive here goes through a couple villages so it is interesting but half the drive is on some very rough pot holes roads. The final 6km or so is dirt but very smooth, I was thinking they must frequently maintain it. Didn't feel 4x4 is necessary to this place. Enjoy your experience.
