Things to do in Cornwall, England: The Best Historic Sites

April 17, 2022 Leonardo Torrence

Cornwall is the extreme southwestern peninsula of England. It has the longest stretch of continuous coastline in Britain and it is one of the sunniest areas in the UK. With picturesque villages, Celtic ruins, light blue waters, gardens and parks and unique architecture it certainly is among the most scenic areas of England. Home of many events and festivals and the land of Cornish pasty, it is definitely worth visiting.

Our family lived here for centuries. In the mid 19th century, several migrated to Canada, then US. Built just after William the Conqueror (1066) Our families visited St Eval a few years ago and the Parish had a special service for us and our ancestors What a GREAT experience! What a warm & generous people. A special prayer for us as we held hands over the original baptismal fount (cir. 1100). St. Eval has a VERY special place in our hearts!???? Ed From CA

Marlborough House

Marlborough House is a small country house. Built around 1810 for John Bull, the celebrated Packet Captain, and originally named Marlborough Cottage, it comprises 3 stories with slightly later 19th Century heightened 2-storey wings at which point it was renamed Marlborough House. Now under new ownership, it is undergoing detailed renovation works following a period when it fell into ruin.

It is lovely to see this wonderful old house that is part of Falmouth’s history being so painstakingly restored. The house had been left to fall into a desperate state of repair in the last few years. I have walked past here many times over the years imagining what the inside would be like and the history behind it. I was fortunate enough to attend Burns Night there this year. The restoration that has been carried out is magnificent and is being sympathetically and lovingly carried out by the new owners Chris and Karen. When the restoration is completed it will truly be a beautiful jewel in our lovely town once again.

Cotehele

Cotehele just might be the best NT property we have visited - though take care getting there, as sat-nav may send you down some very narrow roads. Unlike many 'stately' homes, this Tudor house feels really liveable. With house, garden, flower mill and sailing barge, the site covers several acres, so allow plenty of time, go on a fine day and be prepared to walk - though yu can drive down to the barge.

Good value and well worth a visit.????????????????
