Colorado is home to no less than twenty-six ski resorts such as those in Vail and Breckenridge; other winter activities include snowboarding, sledding, sleigh rides, snow hiking and snowmobiling. The state is blessed with national parks, grasslands and forests where in warmer weather you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking or rock climbing. Wildlife abounds, from bears to moose and raccoons to wolverines. More interested in local history? Head for either the Ute Indian Museum or the Koshare Indian Museum, and don't miss the forts such as Fort Garland and Bent's Old Fort. For a complete change, why not take a ride in a hot air balloon from South Park Valley or Boulder and admire Colorado's picturesque landscape from above?

A key feature in the Denver skyline because of its gold bell-shaped dome, the Capitol Building, fittingly in the Mile High City, has a point located at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. Free tours are available for visitors.
A beautiful capital building that has an official marker when you cross the 1 mile mark at 5,280 Feet above sea level. The marking is etched into the 13th step riser of the main stairway. Great view of Denver's Courthouse and the foothills of the Rockies.

Tickets are for same-day tours only; no advance tickets are available. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 5 per person. During peak travel times (Memorial Day through Labor Day, Spring Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Winter Break) tickets are limited and in high demand. This was a very enjoyable experience and well worth your time if you're visiting Denver. Tickets have to be obtained in person and are given out on a first come, first serve basis. We arrived early so that we could get on the first tour of the day. We went on a Monday, and the ticket line was fairly steady in length from the time tickets started being handed out to when we entered the tour. The tour starts with a video presentation that talks about the history of the mint. Next, you're taken through the mint where the coin production process is shown. There are numerous historical items and additional information throughout the tour. As a free souvenir, everyone on the tour received one blank penny and one brand new penny.

Beautiful building. Free to get in and free tour. Very interesting, one bit of warning if you want to go walk up to the dome it is a 96 step stairs to it.
