As you walk around Coimbra and find yourself in Almedina Square, you may notice a small statue that is meant to be a tribute to Coimbra's fado. It is a work of the sculptor Alves Andre. The Monument to the Fado of Coimbra is half a guitar and half a woman. It is made in bronze. It's definitely worth a look if you are walking around the city.

This figure features much in the city's songs and words and the sculptural depiction in bronze is most impressive. Holding a pitcher, she is shown seated with a scarf on her head and wearing a shawl. Her shoes are beside her feet that are coolly resting on the stone.

At the awesome courtyard of "Paço das Escolas" in the "Universidade de Coimbra", almost in front of the famous "Biblioteca Joanina" and not far from the legendary "Torre da Cabra", stands the iconic "Estátua de Dom João III". The statue, by acclaimed Portuguese sculptor Francisco Franco, dates from 1948-1950 and honors the Portuguese King Dom João III, who was responsible for the definitive installation, in 1537, of the University in its actual campus, overlooking the majestic "Rio Mondego". Bring your camera! Great pics await your visit! Enjoy!
