Things to do in Cody, Wyoming (WY): The Best Sights & Landmarks

December 28, 2021 Diedre Savory

Cody, named for its legendary founder, Buffalo Bill Cody, remains as full of Old West adventure as it was during the days when Bill himself roamed Wyoming. Serving as the Eastern gateway to Yellowstone National Park, Cody is just a few miles away from pristine wilderness where actual buffalo can still be seen. The town attracts tourists and cowboys alike with reenactments of famous shoot-outs, restored frontier buildings and with the Cody Stampede, which the town hosts every July 4.

Dead Indian Summit Overlook

I've lived in the West most of my life, but had never been to northwest Wyoming. The scenery on the Chief Joseph highway is the most spectacular of our loop through Yellowstone and Cody.

Old Trail Town

OPEN May 15 through SEPTEMBER 30, 7 days a week Take a walk through history. 27 historic frontier buildings have been reconstructed on the original townsite of Cody, many furnished with period artifacts. Old Trail Town is also home to the Museum of the Old West.

Lots of western history here. I like that the buildings are authentic and were relocated here for historic preservation. I loved seeing the cabin that Butch Cassidy the Sundance Kid and the Hole in the Wall gang hid out in, Curly's cabin (General Custer's Indian scout), as well as the burial place of Jeremiah Johnston. (Yes, his real name was Johnston, not Johnson, like the movie with Robert Redford). Lots of authentic western and Indian artifacts. I love ghost towns and the old west so this looked exactly like a western town would have back in the day and I like that it is located at the very spot where Buffalo Bill Cody first built "Cody City". I enjoyed our visit very much. Took about 1 1/2 hours to walk though everything.

The. Cody rodeo is a terrific way to experience the flavor of the West. For a reasonable price, you can watch cowboys riding bucking broncos and bulls, calf roping, barrell racing and other events with a crowd that values God, America and family. Highly recommended.

Pahaska Tepee

Hubby and I spent 2 nights at Pahaska in Cabin 1, it has a fabulous view of the mountains and a porch to relax on after touring Yellowstone. The cabin was adorable and very clean. The bathroom was big and looked like it was recently re-modeled. We even saw a bison while we were packing up to leave. We will definitely recommend this place to others. We didn't miss wifi or TV but would have liked to have a fridge in the room. They did give us ice for our coolers though
