China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a unitary sovereign state in East Asia and the world's most populous country, with a population of around 1.404 billion. Covering approximately 9,600,000 square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), it is the third- or fourth-largest country by total area, depending on the source consulted. China also has the most neighbor countries in the world. Governed by the Communist Party of China, it exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

Wandu Mountain City Fortress

We visited on recommendation of lonely planet and it was amazing! The snow covered ruins looked very beautiful and suitably dramatic and most of the signs featured Chinese, English, Korean, Russian, and Japanese. The explanations were simple and there was lots to see and walk around. The minus 0°C temperatures didn't affect our enjoyment at all and whilst we may have missed some of the slight details due to the snow the entire area was gorgeous. Be careful of the paths though, as snowfall in the North is pretty heavy and can obscure the paths borders. All in all a brilliant place to walk around and explore for an hour and a half to a few hours depending on interest levels!

Yumbu Lakang

Yumbu Lakang was built for the first Tibetan King, Nyatri Tsanpo, in the 2nd Century BC and became the Tibetan Kings’ palace since then. It then became the summer palace for Princess Wenchen and Songtsen Gampo, that was during the reign of Songtsen Gampo himself. The palace became a Gelugpa monastery during the reign of the fifth Dalai Lama after Songtsen Gampo moved to the capital Lhasa in the 7th Century. The name“Yumbu” means female dear named after the shape of the Jormo Zhaxi Ceri Mountain which looks like a female dear. “lagang” meaning Sacred palace . Hence the name of Yumbulagang” the sacred palace of mother and son” in Tibetan dialect.
