We absolutely loved this road trip and would recommend it to anyone with an adventurous heart. No, the hotels are not great and the road conditions tend to be poor, but no one should some to this part of the world looking for luxury. This trip is 100% and the incredible natural beauty of remote Patagonia. We have been all over South America, and this is the single most incredible stretch of wilderness we have encountered, even surpassing Torres del Paine. The only gripe we had was how difficult it was to find any relevant information about the trip and what to expect. We did ours in a small 4x4 rented round trip from Puerto Montt. After driving all the way to Caleta Tortel, we returned to Coyhaique and crossed into Argentina. We then linked this trip into another week on Route 40 and the Seven Lakes before crossing back into Chile at Cardenal Samore. Absolutely a perfect adventure. If you are looking a detailed guide to road tripping the Carretera Austral, just internet search our name, Career Break Adventures with Carretera Austral. Happy driving!

An amazing road with views and goats, the 28 hairpin turns on the steep slopes leading to Portillo Ski resort and the border crossing to Mendoza Argentina is an amazing drive. It only takes 10-30 minutes and the views are sheer and awe inspiring. I get a bit nervous with heights but the road is wide and safe so I just focussed on the road ahead while my wife informed me of the scenery. A herd of goats appeared at the half way mark, slowing us down. There are a lot of trucks on this route so drive to conditions and don’t speed. You can see the old train route, now in ruins, with its impressive tunnels as you traverse the climb. The last toll on the road on the Chilli side has only an upcoming toll. If you’re going to Portillo and tell them this, “Voi a Portillo”, you don’t pay the toll.
