Domaine Raymond Bossis

Since 1919 the Domaine des Groies has been in the family. It was in 1924 that Auguste Bossis began planting vines, of these vines, that only one rank remains today. Our job is to get the best out of our vines, given the weather that changes the parameters of the crop every year. We are very concerned about respect for the environment, which is why we practise Optimus-based agriculture, which minimizes the impact of pesticides on grapes and thus on wines.

We toured this establishment as an excursion while on a Mediterranean cruise. The facility is a winegrower, cognac distillery and rackhouse. They operate under their own brand and do their own blending. Our tour started in the vineyard. We missed the grape harvest but we were encouraged to sample the grapes from the vine and they were indescribably flavorful. We then walked through the grape press area and next the distillery proper. There we were told how cognac is made and got samples at each stage. This part of the tour was presented by a woman and her father. They were gracious and absolutely charming especially when she needed help from her father (in French) with our questions. We then toured the stone-walled caves where the barrels of cognac age and finished the tour with a tasting in their gift shop. Fear not! No hard sell. Just friendly assistance. We bought 2 bottles and once home we realized it was the best cognac we ever had. We were quite sad when that last bottle was emptied. Since they are family-owned they only make a certain amount and that's not enough to bother shipping it. (I've tried!). Amazon will happily tease you with pictures of the bottle and its label, but forget trying to order it. As far as I can tell, to get any you must go there! Honestly, this entire event was so wonderful we've already decided we'd repeat this tour if we ever find ourselves in that part of France again. (And this time, we'd buy more than 2 bottles!)

We had a fabulous morning visiting Cognac Bertrand. We were met at the entrance by Seph who explained about the family history of the Bertrand house and the annual cycle of cultivating the vines and how the grapes are then distilled into Cognac. He made this very informative and kept the interest of 2 teenage boys! We then met Therese who lead the tasting. She explained about the different cognacs and Pineau. They were all delicious. All in all a great experience made extra special by the personal and warm welcome of the owners.
