We went out to Sierra Gorda with our guide Juan Emanuel from Bike Queretaro tours. The drive out is not necessarily beautiful but unique. We stopped at Puerta del cielo for a picture, then went to chuveje falls. The falls were beautiful and a short easy hike. The water is crystal clear but freezing. The food stand right outside was delicious. We then went to Rio escanela and the puente de dios. This was incredible. The hike was a little longer, but not difficult. You cross multiple wooden bridges, with many great spots for beautiful pictures and scenery. The puente itself was amazing, again with really cold water, but I was able to hike past this and there were great views past it as well..

Best place to stay at Zapotitlan Salinas closest place to the Biosphere and Botanical Garden is Hotel El Calvario for a very reasonable price ! The rooms (we were. Two. Our guide with truck was Maurino native very knowledgeable who spoke pretty good english. Whatsapp +52 (1) 337-107-5882 they also helped us get taxi to two good nearby restaurants Amber and Itandehui both very good and very reasonably priced. We also walked there from Calvario. The Biosphere is wonderful and Maurino was fabulous we will definitely return.

We were a group of four who took a bus from the Poniente bus station in Mexico City to the Don Bruno hotel for three nights in early March. We were lucky to have sunshine for visiting Sierra Chincua and el Rosario since the butterflies were very active, but the high point was our guide Oscar who not only did an excellent job of explaining everything we were seeing, but also took us around to the other sites in Angangueo. He has suffered the cancellation of 10 trips this year because of the difficulties in the town and is supporting a family on what he makes guiding and driving taxi. We highly recommend Oscar Reyes. His contact information is [email protected] or WhatsApp +52 715 127 2308.

Located next to the tiny village of El Rosario, this sanctuary is the winter nesting grounds for millions of monarch butterflies that migrate from the U.S. each year.
Getting to see the hundreds of millions of Monarch Butterflies at the El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Reserve was a dream come true! My husband and I went there with Natural Habitats Adventures in January 2020. We stayed in Angangueo for two nights. It is a charming town high in the mountains (about 9000 feet). The butterfly reserve is a few miles above the town near the top of the mountain. When we arrived at the reserve, we rode horses up the trail for a mile or so, then walked about half-mile to the area where the Monarchs were roosting in the Oyamel Fir trees. It was breath-taking to see the masses of monarchs hanging in the branches, thickly covering the tree trunks, and flying about when they were warmed by the sun. Seeing this spectacle was a bucket list adventure, I highly recommend going!
