Things to do in Castries, Castries Quarter: The Best Historical & Heritage Tours

June 8, 2021 Ying Subia

The bustling port city of Castries is St. Lucia's capital. Shoppers flock to the city's dozens of stores and to Castries Market for fruits, vegetables and handicrafts. Sightseers admire murals painted by a local artist inside Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and relax in Derek Walcott Square, named for the St. Lucian Nobel-prize-winning poet. Atop Morne Fortune (Hill of Good Luck) - where the French and English battled over control of the island - visitors take in panoramic vistas.

Enjoy the amazing scenery as we drive the west coast road with stops at Morne Fortune (where the last battle was fought between the French and the British), Marigot Bay (a heaven for yachters), banana plantations, and the village of Anse La Raye (to experience the experience of village lifestyle).  Time may also permit "rhythm of rum tour" which is a tour of our rum distillery.

We had an amazing trip with Andy who looked after us very well. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history, the flora and fauna and the landscape. All questions were answered with a smile. Andy met us as arranged and took us to Pigeon Island showing us local places of interest during the journey and giving photo opportunities. We had a very informative tour of the fort and then had some free time on the beach. Andy was flexible with route and timings which was ideal. We would strongly recommend booking with A + tours. I arranged a Round-the-Island Tour with Andre for 7 of us, some of whom live here and some of whom were here on boats for a long period while the borders were closed. We all wanted a change of scene and a chance to look around. It's a very difficult time for taxi drivers and others with none of the usual tourist crowds and cruise ships here. On the other hand we took advantage of the lack of people to enjoy the view points and quiet places. Andre entertained us as usual with his excellent knowledge of the island and remembered how to sing! We stopped on the way down the west coast to buy cassava bread and at Soufriere for freshly - made smoothies at Zaca's. We bought lovely pottery in Choiseul, drove up to the lighthouse at Moule a Chique in Vieux Fort and had a late lunch at the Reef before driving back up the east coast. It was a long day but we so enjoyed it and Andre was an untiring, companiable and flexible driver. I highly recommend him.

Shal, our guide and driver of the Jungle Tour Landrover jeep, was just right for us two adventurous couples. With a cooler full of waters, beers and rumpunch, we saw tropical rainforest, ate freshly baked bread from a local village bakery (no sign on the building, but Shal knows this kind of thing) bought local jerk seasoning and handmade woven baskets. I had my misgivings about the mud baths at the volcano, but we had a blast. There were a bunch of young Germans at the time. We all got covered in the special cleansing clay (with bathing suits on). Pretty rustic, but a cool experience. We felt refreshed and my skin was so soft afterwards. Shal was so personable, we ended up singing country songs with him as we whizzed through the beautiful landscape. One warning, when the top is on the Landrover, it gets fumy inside. We only had the top on when it was raining. Most of the day it was not raining, and the fresh air and sweet rich fragrance of the rainforest made up for it. Our lunch in Soufriere with a spectacular view of the Pitons over the bay was delicious - I was surprised by and enjoyed what tasted like potato salad, but was made with green bananas, no potatoes at all! Shal got us back to the cruise ship just in time - what a full fun day!

You cannot go wrong with Andy. He customized a tour for two of us when we had 6 hr between disembarkation and the airport. I told him easy hiking in Pitons, and he took us to the Tet Paul trail. Then, with a few min to go, we stopped at a beach. Andy is informative without dominating the conversation. He stopped somewhere for a bag of cassava bread that was enchanting. You can tell he loves this island.
