Things to do in Cape Town Central, Western Cape: The Best Wineries & Vineyards

January 8, 2022 Stefan Strunk

Cape Town glistens at the southern toe of the African continent. Tourist brochure-views at Blaauwberg Beach and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens are within easy driving distance of "The Mother City." The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve provides sweeping sea vistas, hiking trails and wildlife encounters. On a more somber note, travelers can visit Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years.

Had a wine and snacks with friends at the winery. Very good setting and the wine is excellent. Try the Sauvignon blanc or Shiraz.

I highly recommend Glen Carlou as part of a wine-tasting tour. The setting is spectacular, nestled in a valley and surrounded by mountains and a lake. There is a great contemporary art gallery that you can wander through, (all works are for sale and not stupidly priced at all). after your tasting, take the time to sit on their beautiful balcony with a bite and more wine. I especially loved their Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot wines. The grounds are lovely too. Take your time here, it’s good for your palate and your soul. One of my two favorite wineries.

The day we went to Swarland was exceptionally hot, which was a shame as it would have been great to sit outside for our wine tasting. However, we tasted some very good wines and had a really good, value for money, cheese board to go with it. Great, friendly people at the winery.
