We are open from May until the 1st November and are welcoming you in our Mountain Guesthouse.
We took the Ebenalp cable car, then walked down the mountain to the cafe... the cable car ride was very scenic and fun, the walk down easy, if now and again you had to watch your footing, you go past the cows grazing with their clanking bells, past the paragliders charging off the side of the mountain!! through the cave where the bones of 600 bears were found, past the little chapel, along the wooden walkway attached to the side of the mountain and they you round the corner and there it is.. delightful and very scenic cafe! We only had a hot chocolate, coffee and cold drink - plus very tasty local speciality biscuits - as we'd taken a picnic with us... but it was lovely sitting staring out at the beautiful scenery in glorious sunshine. Highly recommend visiting this amazingly located cafe!

Ebenalp is the ideal starting place for captivating walks in the Alpstein massif, whether you prefer a leisurely ramble or a vigorous assault on a summit. With our modern cable-car you can reach the 800 Meter higher located Ebenalp in just a few minutes. From Ebenalp, a short walk on a well-maintained hiking trail passes through the Wildkirchli Caves to the hermitage and the chapel. The trail then continues along a rock face to the famous mountain hostelry Aescher (open from May to the end of October). The hostelry Ebenalp can be reached in 5 minutes from the mountain-station and offers excellent meals and drinks with a great view. A bit further away, the hostelry Schaefler can be found, also with a stunning view and great foods and beverages.
Very well maintained and operated. If you have the 1/2 price railway card for adults it works. It is fast and saves you 600 D+ for beautiful hikes at the top!

The Church of Saint Mauritius is located in the Northeast corner of Appenzell next to the River Sitter. The building originates from around 1069. During its history 4 churches have been built on the site with each church being larger than the original. Most of the Gothic features were destroyed in a fire but the tower still remains along with the quire which is between the nave and the sacred area. The location and interior of this Catholic Church as it stands today is quite magnificent with its lavish ornate interiors, stunning stained glass and vibrant frescoes. It is certainly well worth a visit if you are lucky enough to be in the beautiful town of Appenzell which is situated at the foot of the Alpstein mountains. St Mauritius was attributed to be the patron saint of Army Infantry & Weapon smiths. The location of the church and grounds are as you would expect in Switzerland, beautifully clean and pristine, the grave yard is particularly impressive with its eclectic grave stones and markers.
