Things to do in Canterbury Region, South Island: The Best Traveler Resources

August 4, 2021 Malia Yoakum

Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

What a terrific surprise recommended to us by one of the market place dinner vendors. I would not have put that I should go visit a library while on holiday- this is an exception! We could have spent hours here, hats off to the people of Christchurch for the vision to put together such a great space. We had to explore top to bottom and found such wonderful spaces everywhere. The learning environment this creates for young people will have a generational impact. Another great bonus is the views of the Cathedral Square- here is where you want to take your photos vs through all the construction gates. How do we get one of these where we live? Staff were great at answering our very touristy questions and sharing there amazing work space with us. I'd actually put this on my "Must see" list for Christchurch.

Housed in a great old Bluestone building the Visitor Centre has a great stock of information and very helpful and knowledgeable staff. The building also houses the Maori rock art display where you can get a guided tour or just amble through at your leisure. The cost $22.00 per adult is a reasonable price to see great art.

We called into the centre to see what additional information might be available for the area on biking tracks. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We always visit these centres as usually they have the current un to date information. A fairly good selection in the gift shop as well.

We stopped at the Arthur's Pass Visitor Center after a foggy, rainy drive from Greymouth, en route to Christchurch. It was a nice break from the weather. The staff said it was generally rainy in that area...although all of the postcards show bright sunny days. Regardless, the Visitor Centre had a nice selection of maps, postcards, pins, and clothing and the staff was helpful and informative about the remainder of our journey.

We called into the centre to confirm we were to be picked up by Hasslefree Tours on the Monday morning. The young lady on duty that morning, was very helpful with my inquiry and also showed us a few other things to see in the area. She recommended the best cafe for coffee and restaurants in the area. Very helpful and polite to us Aussie travellers.
