Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. The Memorial is on State Highway 1 in Amberley and the write up about Charles Upham is excellent. Definitely worth stopping for.

Very attractive and gentle garden with thoughtful inscriptions memorialising those that gave up their lives. A very quiet and introspective example of a countries gratitude

It was a lovely and touching memorial to those who lost their lives in the earthquakes. It nestled alongside the Avon river and is lovely in the stone with the names inscribed. The little pink boot with some stones with the name Mandy on them was a graphic reminder of the loss and really humanized the experience. Its a must do to pay your respects to those that lost their lives in the quake.

Bridge of Remembrance is a wonderful dedication to those soldiers who passed away in World War I. It is a stone bridge with a sculpted triumphal memorial arch. Certainly worth a photo stop.

The Britomart Monument or obelisk is to be found well out of the village, right around the headland. It can't be seen from any low point in the village. The top of the very tall flag pole beside it helps in location terms. From Top Ten Holiday Park it is a good 30/40 minute walk. Worth it just to view Victorian values at their most greedy and exquisitive.

A pioneer of the past, to read the history and the reason why this monument was erected puts everything into perspective. It’s directly opposite the bakery so a good place to stop.
