Things to do in California, United States: The Best Natural History Museums

October 3, 2021 Jeremy Dunfee

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

Museum of Ancient Wonders

From treasures of the pharaoh to the mystical ritual of African masks to Mesozoic dinosaur skeletons, the Museum of Ancient Wonders awes visitors. More than 200 reproduction artifacts and laboratory fossil casts gathered from 30 museums worldwide.

A small but ambitious museum filled with impressive recreations of historical artifacts, each with a detailed description. Most items currently on display are Egyptian, with some African and dinosaur items also included in their own sections. Because they are modern recreations, almost nothing is behind glass. This allows a visitor to closely inspect the works (no touching though, of course). The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable. They explained that they have many more items in storage and hope to expand. I’m happy to contribute to help them meet their goals. I felt it was clear they had a passion for the museum and the work they put into it. The museum is not very large in its current location, and one can get through the whole thing in an hour or two. Still, I think it’s worth the price of admission for anyone with an interest in history, especially Egyptian history.

I am a big fan of natural history museums. So I was very happy to have a chance to visit the one in Los Angeles. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. There is a nice mixture of traditional displays as well as some very interesting educational areas. We truly loved the traditional taxidermy displays showing wildlife in very realistic settings. At the same time the lower level education center had a wonderful mixture of displays including live animals. The spider cages were unique and fascinating. The building itself is grand and the museum is very large. From dinosaurs to less visited bird displays a bit off the beaten track there was plenty to see and the crowds were modest in many areas. Overall a great visit for those interested in science and a chance to visit one of the exceptional museums in the world.

I visited Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History to hear the local artist Ann Thiermann speak. She painted the mural at the museum and has painted local motives all her life. The staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful throughout the evening at this lovely little Natural History museum.
