Things to do in Buenos Aires, Capital Federal District: The Best Lessons & Workshops

October 5, 2021 Frederic Celentano

The birthplace of the tango is, like the dance itself, captivating, seductive and bustling with excited energy. Atmospheric old neighborhoods are rife with romantic restaurants and thumping nightlife, and Buenos Aires' European heritage is evident in its architecture, boulevards and parks. Cafe Tortoni, the city's oldest bar, will transport you back to 1858, and the spectacular Teatro Colon impresses just as it did in 1908. Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of premium retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards.

Alejandro and Juju are truly fantastic tango teachers and are a great team. I stayed at Alejandro’s tango apartments and took my course of ten lessons in-house in its lovely studio of classical yesteryear charm. During my lessons Alejandro and Juju paid great attention to my every dance detail, breaking down my movements to basics, and reconstructing me LEGO-style in order to achieve the correct embrace, posture, movement, weight shifts and connection. I’m ever so grateful for their tireless correction and reiteration of all the elements important for me to achieve seemingly effortless movement in my tango. I’m now seeing the benefits of my lessons and exercises that were taught, as my body is now more relaxed while dancing, my feet do not ache as much, and the whole experience of tango is a more enjoyable connection to be had. After each lesson, one can very easily walk to nearby El Beso, to practise on the unsuspecting ! I highly recommend learning with Alejandro and Juju. Together they radiate an inner calm, and impart a traditional style of tango that is graceful and grounded, at one with the music. Not only are they great teachers, but also wonderful people, very warm and welcoming. I felt very much at home during my stay and got to know them both to be wonderful friends. The location of these apartments is central, with milongas closeby, supermarkets, eateries and day to day amenities within the neighbourhood itself. A very convenient place to stay! So after these fantastic few weeks of tango lessons and endless milongas, I hope to continue the tango journey!

After a single lesson with Luciana and her assistant, my partner and I feel we know the basics of Argentine Tango and can practice on our own. That's unusual in our dance experience. The lesson was personal and in depth, and also exacting for those of us in the group who had dance experience. I would highly recommend taking lessons here if you're at all interested in Argentine culture. One caveat, dress lightly as the smallish studio can get very warm.

Taking profit of our short visit to Buenos Aires, my wife asked me to help organizing several private lessons of Argentina Tango in order to improve her skills with professional advice from expert. So, I contacted Alejandro and exchanged many emails, as he spent time to ask for more background, experience and specific wishes... Once at the studio, after the first 30 minutes, I could see that he has “detected” weak points of my wife’s dancing style (despite of several years of learning), and he patiently explained to my wife with passion, (sometime mentioning the analogy to eastern philosophy) and focus on improving those weak points: body balance, self confidence, self reliance, listening to the sound of silence...When I got bored, I could borrow and read some of his books on Zen meditation, Zen philosophy (ku’an), and even Nietzche :-) If we had few more days in BA, we’d surely spend lot of time with Alejandro to get more impregnated with his passionate and unconditional love of Argentina Tango, while being ready to share this passion to others with dedication, expertise, patience and compassion. Muchas Gracias, Alejandro ! See you next time ...
