Things to do in Brooklyn, New York (NY): The Best Outdoor Activities

March 17, 2022 Joeann Galban

It seems like most folks have a grandmother, great-uncle or some other distant relative that used to live in Brooklyn, or perhaps a friend that lives there now. In the early 1900s, it was a mecca for immigrants arriving via Ellis Island. A hundred years later, young professionals and artists left pricey Manhattan digs for Brooklyn's cheaper and more expansive space. Neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, were restored and reborn as funky enclaves. Walk or bike over the historic Brooklyn Bridge (or ride the subway) to Brooklyn Heights for a stroll along the Promenade and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Meander through Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a taste of nature in the urban wilds. Catch a performance at the world-famous Brooklyn Academy of Music. From the delicious Italian restaurants of Bensonhurst to the Irish bars that line the avenues of Bay Ridge, from the hotdogs and rollercoasters of Coney Island to the bagels and handball courts of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a state of mind as well as a dynamic community. Discover why, no matter where people move on to, they remain Brooklynites at heart.

Loudest Yeller Bicycle Tours

Loudest Yeller Bicycle Tours offers two tours. Both are four hours and both cost $45 per person. The Living City Day Tour is a cultural and historical tour of Lower Manhattan. The tour meets at 11AM everyday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. From there we touch upon Williamsburg and Greenpoint before taking the ferry to the financial district of Manhattan. We take a relaxed route that follows many bicycle paths and neighborhood streets. Along the way our guides will point out tourist destinations and explain the best way to see them. It's a four hour tour and the guides are funny and full of good stories about the places you travel through. The best part of the tour may be the picnic. We stop at a gourmet cheese shop to buy picnic supplies and then eat in Washington Square Park. The Two Bridges Night Bike Tour begins everyday at 7PM, with a ride that covers the environmental history of Greenpoint. Your guide will talk about the effects the Newton Creek Oil Spill (one of the largest in U.S. History) had on the neighborhood, about the city's struggles with water management, the pros and cons of Gentrification, the history of oysters in New York Harbor and Swedish boat building. Along the ride you will see Manhattan at dusk, from across the East River, before biking over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan for a tasty gelato -- and back to Williamsburg. The history is fun and educational -- the scenery is stunning. You will wonder why Paris is called the "City of Lights" after you see how NYC glows. This ride does entail two climbs (the bridges), so you should be prepared to do some pedaling on this ride. The views are well worth the effort.
