Stare Mesto, the Old Town of Slovakia's capital, whisks visitors back a few centuries as they wander cobblestone streets, admire the Baroque architecture, enjoy summer and Christmas concerts at Old Town Hall and while away time at cafes and restaurants. Venture beyond for more sites, including the 15th-century hrad (castle) with its treasury and history and music museums, the Slovak National Theater and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Slovak National Gallery, housed in an 18th-century palace.

I met our guide at Tourist Info Wien (right off the U1 line at Karlsplatz stop). He explained a lot of helpful history to us on the ride over and then had us watch a short documentary of the concentration camp on iPads in the van which was very wise. We got to Mauthausen with a greater and more In-depth understanding of what took place there which made our visit more meaningful. When we arrived we were given audio guides and a map and allowed to wander the camp and it’s museum on our own for a few hours before reconvening. It was pretty desolate aside from a few school groups visiting. Our tour guide was great and even drove us down into the granite quarry so that we could see it up close. We went to lunch at a nice but casual sit down restaurant that served Austrian cuisine. Overall worth the money and I highly recommend this tour.

Interested in history and wine tasting? Excellent! These impressive ruins have amazing surroundings, rich history and are easily reachable from the city center by car in 30 minutes. For photography lovers this is a place that simply must be added to your collection. The guided tour starts with the Devin Castle tour. Enjoy with us a place, where from one point you will see: two countries, two rivers meeting and the ruins of a castle that was blown up by Napoleon’s army. After the castle tour, your next stop will be the cozy local wine tavern “Viecha Sv. Urbana v Devíne”, situated just a few minutes walk from the castle, you will experience the traditional taste of currant wine, so typical for this location.

It was the perfect way to kickstart my trip to Budapest! Wish I had done this for other routes. This was in stark contrast to my encounter with an over-crowded train from Prague to Bratislava (ugh). Tour guide: Andrea (HU) Andrea never ran out of engaging stories and trivia from Hungary's history. In my next few days in Budapest, I went on a handful of other tours in the city, and I already knew most of what would be said in the intros to Budapest & Hungary! All thanks to what Andrea had taught us during our Sidetrip tour. The hidden gem in this tour is a small synagogue and memorial in Szentendre that I would never have found if I had just gone by what TripAdvisor or travel blogs said. I truly appreciate that Andrea devoted time to discuss the history of the Jewish in Hungary, and made the effort to ensure that we got our facts straight (e.g. the location of the "Shoes on the Danube" memorial isn't actually where the atrocities being referred to happened). Driver: Tomas (HU) Tomas so kindly brought us to a view point with stunning (and crowd-free) vistas of Esztergom [which we were told not all drivers on this tour do]. He notably did this despite some unexpected traffic on the road. I felt safe the whole time during the drives, plus we made it to Budapest on schedule. Logistics: the icing on the cake :P It was superb. Vehicle was clean, looked fairly new and well maintained, spacious and comfortable inside, and had seat belts for everyone. Food actually tasted good where we took our breaks for a morning snack and lunch. Andrea brought us to a money changer that had fair rates. Luggage wasn't a problem because it was in the vehicle the whole time! I can go on and on with other nice things to say... Is this tour cheap? Doesn't seem so at first glance, but it offers so much more value vs. sitting in a crowded intercity train plus taking separate public transport rides out of Budapest for day trips plus generic walking tours. I honestly wish I had done this for my Prague-Bratislava leg, but there wasn't enough demand, so start booking people!!! This is a quality service that deserves to thrive in this industry.

Insightful, off the beaten track journey in a legendary 1970-1990’s Czechoslovak Škoda car (or a modern van by 4+ guests) with our local guide to the most intriguing spots of the Cold War era Bratislava. Explore a vast concrete housing estate, the Soviet monument Slavín, post-industrial developments, the Iron Curtain border zone and loads of communist-era architecture. The tour brings alive the fascinating story of Bratislava in the turbulent 20th century. What can you expect? Cool drive and quirky stops to see and understand: - the first prefabricated apartment block in Slovakia as well as the largest socialist housing project, Petržalka - communist-era architecture (inverted pyramid of Slovak Radio, rocket-shape TV tower Kamzík, Freedom Square) - political objects: Soviet memorial Slavín, diplomatic 1970’s hotel, 1980’s parliament, villas of former communist leaders - controversial ufo-like SNP bridge, causing destruction of the Jewish district former Iron Curtain area
