The world's largest salt plain is a popular and scenic destination for tour groups.
Without a doubt one of the most stunning and special places in the world we have toured, it is advisable to book a three-day tour well in advance from one of the leading companies in the area, rather than from small companies.

You can drive up or hike, just be aware some taxi drivers may not take you to the very top or come all the way up to pick you back up. Once you get to the base you can climb all the way to the very top which makes you feel like an extreme rock climber when really you're just mildly terrified of falling to your demise. If you go at night, you can make a fire with your friends and tell ghost stories and see the lights of La Paz. 10/10 would most likely recommend. I would suggest not going by yourself though because there can sometimes be creepers up there. Just be aware.

A beautiful trip through the astonishing western movie style nature around Tupiza with Puerto del Diablo and Inca Canyon. Especially on the back of a horse that knows the way better than the rider ;) Enjoy the 5-hour tour for an enhanced impression of the scene and profound experience of the ride. Don't forget sunscreen and tight pants, if available. The tours start just a short ride with public transportation out of the city. The horses were behaving very well in clean and well fed shape and equipped with quality sattles. Recommendation!

I always enjoy visiting Valle de la Luna. My in-laws live in San Miguel, so it's an easy trip and wonderful way to spend a couple of hours on a nice day. I also recommend lunch at Hotel Oberland a few kilometers down the road on the way to Mallasa.
