Things to do in Bilbao, Basque Country: The Best Day Trips from

March 30, 2022 Oliva Fomby

Travelers generally come to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim—some for the art inside, but many for the amazing building itself. The Fine Arts Museum and the Basque Museum may not have been designed by Frank Gehry, but are worth a visit, and you can catch international opera stars at the Palacio Euskalduna.

I did the 4 day tour - first rate stuff. Zach and Irene were tremendous and super- friendly. I was picked up at my hotel daily and driven round the Basque country in great style. Whilst I was expecting Guernica/Gernika to be special, ( which it was) there were a few other gems which I wouldn't have found on my own, the fishing town of Bermeo the salt mine and the sheep farm to name but 3 unexpected high-lights. They gave good recommendations on restaurants, and the few I tried did not disappoint. Highly recommended.

My husband and I visited Spain for 3.5 weeks in October 2019, and our day in Rioja with Northern Spain Gastronomy was the highlight. We were very impressed with the level of service we received from Irene, she was friendly, fun, knowledgeable and helpful...absolutely amazing!  Irene was delight to deal with and assisted us coordinate everything several weeks leading up to our arrival in Bilbao. We worked together on the schedule and she made sure the whole day was personalized for us, making adjustments to better suit our interest and dietary requirements. Our tour started from Bilbao airport, Irene picked us up on time in her very confortable Range Rover Sport. We made our way to the Rioja region admiring the beautiful scenery over a quick historical introduction to the Basque country. We visited two wineries before lunch and a third in the afternoon followed by a stroll through the gorgeous medieval village of Laguardia and a couple of secret photo stops to admire some of the incredible architecture of the region, the buildings of Marques de Riscal and Ysios wineries. We enjoyed the premium tastings which were very organised and insightful. Overall it was a well-balanced mix of wineries, traditional and contemporary which made for a good introduction to Rioja wines. The traditional Riojano lunch was delicious, the food, wine and setting is something we still talk about five months later! Everything ran smoothly from start to finish and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Rioja region. Thank you again Irene! We can't wait to return soon!!! ????????

I would definitely recommend this trip I just wished it was better weather.

The estuary of river Urdaibai has many attractions that can be enjoyed in a short trip from Bilbao. The hermitage of Gaztelugatxe (set as Dragonstone in the Game of Thrones series) is a good start to enjoy the sea views in contrast to the mountain. Then, the coastal town of Bermeo allows you to see firsthand how the old fishing traditions are maintained in the present. Finally, from Bermeo you reach Gernika, where rural and agricultural traditions are mixed with their varied history. Gernika is the reference town in Basque history, since here is the ancient tree where the medieval kings of Spain swore to respect local laws. It is also where the German bombing took place during the Spanish Civil War that destroyed much of it. Take this opportunity to combine the beautiful landscapes with the history of the Basque Country!
