Excellent palace located in Islamnagar, North of the city of Bhopal. It is a very charming place with only few tourists coming there. Next to the Rani Mahal, the Chaman Mahal is situated. Both are very intersting and nicely maintained.

A blink-and-you-miss-it stop on the highway between Bhopal and Sanchi. There are no signs until the Tropic of Cancer line itself. Look out for it on Google Maps and you can stop your car on the side of the road. Overall, a quiet peaceful place, hardly any people around, so no waiting. Not commercialized or promoted by the government, but its hardly required and this keeps the experience simple and quick. Good for a quick photo-op.

The main gate of the palace is generally locked and hence few people ever go inside. But if you ask the caretaker he is more than willing to open the gate and also act as your guide. The Taj Mahal palace was built by Sultan Shah Jahan, Begum of Bhopal as her residence. Its construction spanned over a period of 13 years, from 1871 to 1884. The building was originally named Raj Mahal. The British Resident at Bhopal, highly impressed with the architecture, suggested that the palace be renamed the Taj Mahal, the Taj Mahal at Agra having been built by the Begum's namesake Shah Jahan. The begum accepted the suggestion and the palace was renamed as Taj Mahal. The Begum is said to have ordered a three-year-long celebration called Jashn-e-Taj Mahal after the completion of the building. The palace has been built in the Indo-Saracenic style and is kept cool by the winds blowing in from the lakes. The palace contains 120 rooms, a hall of mirrors or sheesh mahal and the savon bhadon pavilion, an elaborate fountain like structure that simulated the effect of rain.
