Berlin is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

We loved this food tour, it was one of our favorite activities in Berlin! Since it was just our group Liz was able to customize it to our liking. She took us to some of her favorite spots, places we never would have found on our own. We felt like locals and oh man was the food delicious! Liz was very entertaining and charming and even helped us navigate our way to our next activity. We loved every minute of the food tour and highly recommend Liz!

If you are interested in a succinct overview of the incredible history of Berlin and would like to see the key-sights, then this is the tour for you. Visiting the major sites with your expert-guide we will leave no stone unturned, as we touch upon the many Berlins that have been and gone in the past 800 years. We will walk through the Brandenburg Gate, stand in front of the majestic Reichstag, stroll down Wilhelmstrasse (the nerve-centre of the Third Reich) and see one of the surviving fragments of the Berlin Wall. You will here hear tales of tragedy and triumph from across the ages and eventually head into what remains of the grand Imperial Capital.

I highly recommend this experience as a private tour. My guide for the day was Paul, who was punctual, very knowledgeable on all aspects of the history relating to this tour, and was able to answer any question I had. The train trip out to the site was spent explaining the history and placing the events into context, which made the impact of visiting the site more meaningful. I recommend an early departure (I was picked up at 0830), meaning you get out to the site by about 1000 when there is hardly anybody else there. Note that there is about a 15-20 minute walk from the train station to Sachsenhausen, therefore I recommend dressing appropriately for the conditions on the day. We discovered when we got out there (no fault of the tour company) that all the buildings are closed on Monday’s during the winter months. It is, however, possible to see in through the windows to get a sense of what occurred. Despite this, we were able to wander freely around under Paul’s expert guidance. The whole tour took about five hours and I was returned back to my hotel. All in all, the tour was efficient, well organised and very informative.

What better way to discover Berlin’s unique history than with a tasty beer? This private tour combines city insights with seriously great beer. Learn about the legacy of the Berlin Wall and share stories over a brew with a local guide. Stroll down Bernauer Strasse and explore the Berlin Wall memorial. Stop by Nordbahnhof, an old ghost station and hear stories of the escapes that happened all those years ago. Head into the Berlin Wall’s Visitor Center and stop by the viewing platform where you have a view into a re-created section of Death Strip. Walk up the hill to Mauer Park and hear more stories about the tunnels from your local host and explore the Berlin Wall Memorial. Check out the murals on the sides of houses including one of the iconic image of Conrad Schumann. All our local hosts are passionate about history and are looking forward to sharing their city with you!

First of all, a bit about our guide, Paul. He was incredible. Full of information, including history leading up to the war, and spent time on the journey telling us the background and showing things of interest. He could answer every question, and was obviously passionate about history and the area. He actually made our visit, and for that we cannot thank him enough. From purchasing the tickets to meeting our guide to getting back to our hotel, the process was easy. The journey is long on the train, followed by a 15 minute walk to Sachsenhausen, so be aware of that. The actual place - I don’t think I can put into words what it was like. The thought of being there, and hearing and imagining what the prisoners went through, was humbling, and made us reflect on how lucky we are. We didn’t take photos, as did not feel it was right to do so (our personal view), and we were also so busy listening to Paul we didn’t really think about taking any. There is a café- we thought there wasn’t so took some lunch with us, but would eat at the café if we returned as it looked nice food (soup/sandwiches/cake) and was reasonably priced. The biggest advice we would give is take a coat, even if it is not particularly cold. The wind across the open space was biting at times. We would say this is an unmissable trip, and be prepared to be moved. And ask for Paul - you won’t be disappointed.

Our virtual tour was spectacular. This was easy to book. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, well organized and took the time to answer all our questions. She allowed us to take the time to observe the memorials and process it. There is nothing like experiencing a tour in person; however, our guide made the experience feel as though we were there. I highly recommend this alternative way of touring during these limited travel times.
