Berlin is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

We visited the exhibition centre across the road from Checkpoint Charlie. It really helped bring the history of East and West Berlin alive, with film footage, newspaper reports and photo's, aswell as historical pieces that helped understand the history of the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall. We also used the Berlin travel card to get us a discount on the entrance price, so worth mentioning if you have one.

This monument commemorates the Cold War airlift from the Berlin Tempelhof Airport. For 13 months the “Rosinenbombers” delivered necessary food, fuel, and other resources to the city. Today the decommissioned airport is a vast, multi-purpose park. Tours are available for some of the terminal and hangar areas, while other areas are housing refugees.
