Things to do in Berlin, Germany: The Best Literary, Art & Music Tours

May 5, 2022 Joeann Galban

Berlin is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

Amazing tour with Martin who showed us great parts of Berlin history and educated us on really interesting facts that even us Bowie-fans did not know. Even with rainy weather we had a wonderful walking tour and got to see great new parts of the city. We cant recommend more this tour for an afternoon on any length trip.

Artists tell you the secrets, the history, the techniques, the rules and the personal stories of graffiti and street art in a walk through a city whose walls are canvasses. A comprehensive history of graffiti and its culture. Berlin's air is thick with paint. Its soundtrack is the clack-clack of a spraycan in the night. Tags tell as much of a story as five storey murals, a blast from a high pressured fire extinguisher can be as expressive as a centuries old canvas from a Dutch master. And we know the history and the culture of it all. Let artists themselves show you the sweetest spots and the finest pieces, whilst giving a comprehensive history of urban art in its modern day Mecca. See huge murals, heaven spots and and throw-ups. Learn about trainbombing and tagging, stencils, paste-ups, stickers and everything in between. Tour includes Urban Nation gallery. Covers Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Schöneberg.

Anti Pub-Crawl: This bar crawl left us incapacitated for two days. I have been on a couple of other bar crawls and this seems to be a fairly standard experience. We started at a communist themed bar, took the metro to a burlesque bar (though there wasn't any entertainment on), followed by an absinthe bar. Things deteriorated quickly after that. We ended up at a massive club that was one of the busiest places I have been, and honestly I can't believe we made it back to our hotel. The guides were pretty good, though the group we were with was a bit clique-y, so we just kept to ourselves.

First of all, a bit about our guide, Paul. He was incredible. Full of information, including history leading up to the war, and spent time on the journey telling us the background and showing things of interest. He could answer every question, and was obviously passionate about history and the area. He actually made our visit, and for that we cannot thank him enough. From purchasing the tickets to meeting our guide to getting back to our hotel, the process was easy. The journey is long on the train, followed by a 15 minute walk to Sachsenhausen, so be aware of that. The actual place - I don’t think I can put into words what it was like. The thought of being there, and hearing and imagining what the prisoners went through, was humbling, and made us reflect on how lucky we are. We didn’t take photos, as did not feel it was right to do so (our personal view), and we were also so busy listening to Paul we didn’t really think about taking any. There is a café- we thought there wasn’t so took some lunch with us, but would eat at the café if we returned as it looked nice food (soup/sandwiches/cake) and was reasonably priced. The biggest advice we would give is take a coat, even if it is not particularly cold. The wind across the open space was biting at times. We would say this is an unmissable trip, and be prepared to be moved. And ask for Paul - you won’t be disappointed.

Just taken the Berlin tour with Marvin, and totally recommend it . There were two of us on our private tour of different abilities with photography and were both accommodated more than adequately. We were taken to some of the ‘big’ obvious sites but also plenty of off the beaten track areas too. Heaps of help with the camera plus tips and tricks that even the experienced one amongst us learned. Thanks again! Can’t recommend this and Marvin enough!

Our private walking tour of Jewish Berlin with Martin was the highlight of our trip to Germany. Martin was extremely knowledgeable, totally fluent in English, had a wonderful sense of humor, and by the end of the tour we felt we had not only learned a great deal, but had made a new friend. I have had several friends plan trips to Berlin and I have always recommended Martin. I simply cannot say enough about our wonderful day with him. Solemn at times, necessarily so given the history, but also enlightening and fun.
