Bergamo is a northern Italy treasure. Dating from 49 BC, Bergamo has two centers: the Alta (upper) city and the Bassa (lower) city, connected by a funicular and walking trails. For historic sites, go to Alta for the Piazza Vecchia, the Cattedrale di Bergamo e Battistero, and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore Baptistry, as well as the quirky mausoleum of Rastelli, the world famous juggler. Bassa is more modern and residential, and boasts Via 20 Settembre - the shopping district.

Very beautiful cathedral. I would rank it higher than the "Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore". They are right next to each other and should visit both.

This is one of the four big gates of the Upper Town. Built by the Venetians and we thouight this is the most impressive gate of all of them.

The rocca occupies a high point in the Citta Alta, so the views over the plain and hills is remarkable. Regrettably, the tower and the museum were not yet open when we visited, but we were early enough to be the only people there. As with many places in Italy, the Great War is memorialized. Here there is a very nice garden and a small collection of archaic war machinery that some will find interesting.

The Church of Sant'Agata del Carmine was built in 1357 on the site of the previous one from the 9th century. The facade is in a classic style, divided into two parts: one with visible bricks and the other with plaster. In the second half of the 15th century it was enlarged and renovated . In the following years, it was extended and enlarged by adding chapels with the participation of private funds . Major damage occurred during the Napoleonic occupation, when it was turned into a prison. The prison was there until 1977. Due to water infiltration, the structure of the building was severely degraded. In 2012, general restoration works began, which led to the renovation of the roof, reconstruction of the Chapel of the Heart of Jesus, as well as the main facade and side walls. Now the church is rich with furniture, paintings, stucco . The interior has a single aisle, longitudinal plan, in a classic 17th-century style with baroque accents. Currently, it is very interestingly renovated and it is really worth visiting this historic church for a while. Free admission.

The beautiful church of Santa Maria Immacolata Delle Grazie is located at the heart of the Bergamo Bassa at Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII. The church of Santa Maria Immacolata delle Grazie in Bergamo was built in 1857-1875 according to the design of the architect Antonio Preda. There was a Franciscan monastery in this place, but due to the reconstruction of Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII it was rebuilt. The present church was built in the neoclassical style on the Greek cross plan. Its decor largely comes from the old church. The vaults were frescoed by the painter Enrico Scuri. The dome's vault is impressive. Next to the church, some of the buildings of the former monastery have been preserved. A beautiful temple, worth visiting during your stay in Bergamo.
