Bergamo is a northern Italy treasure. Dating from 49 BC, Bergamo has two centers: the Alta (upper) city and the Bassa (lower) city, connected by a funicular and walking trails. For historic sites, go to Alta for the Piazza Vecchia, the Cattedrale di Bergamo e Battistero, and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore Baptistry, as well as the quirky mausoleum of Rastelli, the world famous juggler. Bassa is more modern and residential, and boasts Via 20 Settembre - the shopping district.

The fountain takes its name from Alvise Contarini. It was built with the intention of beautifying the central square, Piazza Vecchia, and providing the inhabitants with water for domestic purposes and during droughts. In 1885 , the fountain was pulled down to make way for a statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi. A few decades later, at the beginning of the 20th century, it was reassembled in its original position and a monument to the hero was placed in the Bergamo Bassa. This isn't only a beautiful fountain with pleasent cold and refreshing water but, the most important is that it is fountain with drinking water. You can quench your thirst and to take the water with you from a two water drinking outlets. A beautiful medieval fountain in the middle of the Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the Citta Alta.
